Woman let a stranger use her discount card to save on his cart full of groceries — his unexpected way of repaying her kindness left her speechless
Some acts of kindness may not be life-saving, but they can surely make someone's life better. The impact it can have on a giver and receiver should not be underestimated. A shopper named Rachel Gafeller Silber, who goes by @rachel.w.silber on Facebook, encountered one such incident with a gentleman at a grocery store. In her post on Sunday, October 18, 2026, she mentioned that she hadn’t thought much and agreed to offer her discount card to a stranger because he had a cart full of items. To her surprise, he returned the favor with a gesture that left her in shock.
The woman explained that she barely had any items and was on a routine trip. The stranger in line with her, however, seemed to have a bunch of things. She also noted that he seemed a tourist or visitor, and it was certain that this was not his regular shopping spot. As a result, he didn’t have the discount card many customers have. The cashier asked Silber if she could lend hers, since his bill would be hefty and a simple discount would really help. She agreed, knowing it would benefit both, as she would also earn points on her card. When it was her turn, the man told her, “Ma’am, I would like to pay for your groceries.” She was speechless.
Silber noted that even though she had only $40 worth of items, she was grateful that he even offered. She was so stunned by his gesture that she couldn’t find the words. “He doesn’t have to do it, but you know, times are tough, and I certainly appreciated it,” she said with tears in her eyes. It became a personal reminder that what goes around comes around, and this is why kindness is so important. Seeing someone in need and deciding to help them on the spot takes a lot of heart. In another endearing instance, a shopper came through for an elderly stranger. When she reached the checkout, she was distressed because she couldn’t find the $20 she had carried with her. It was all the money she had, and she was certain she had it with her when she entered the store. She frantically began looking for it on the ground when a stranger behind her noticed. They took out $20 of their own and pretended to “find” it and handed it to the woman. “The look on her face was worth it; she was so relieved," they said. They added that they weren’t very well off financially, but paying that price for someone who clearly needed it felt rewarding.
