First dates can be full of awkward questions and nervous small talk, but sometimes, one person makes it feel effortless to be yourself. Threads user Samantha Jade Durán, who goes by @adisabledicon and has Mafucci syndrome, went on a first date that lasted an incredible 10 hours, with the pair hitting it off right away. But it was something her date said about her disability toward the end of the night that nearly brought her to tears. In a post shared on Monday, October 19, 2026, Durán revealed what he said and why it moved her so much.

The date lasted 10 hours because they just couldn't run out of things to talk about. They chatted about all sorts of things, and while the man asked a few questions about her disability, he never made it the focus of their time together. For Durán, that was a big deal. She was used to having to talk about her condition, her pain, and her medical history to people, but this time, she got to enjoy being on a date without feeling like she had to explain herself. Toward the end of the evening, as he gently massaged her aching legs, he finally clarified why he'd held back on asking too many questions. He told her, "It must be exhausting having to explain something so deeply painful and personal to everyone." Durán was so moved by the comment that she nearly cried.

Durán mentioned that she spends much of her life answering questions about her body, her pain, and the medical experiences she's been through. So someone acknowledging how tiring that can be without needing her to spell it out felt special. For those 10 hours, her date let her forget about her disabilities. He made her feel like a woman enjoying a date, laughing, flirting, and seeing where a connection might lead. She was charmed by the gentleman and said the experience gave her the freedom to simply exist.

Durán has been very open about her struggles with Maffucci syndrome on social media. Her posts often raise awareness about the condition. According to Cleveland Clinic, Maffucci syndrome is a rare genetic condition that can cause bone pain, skeletal deformities, and fractures, along with unusual clusters of blood vessels under the skin. Those affected also need regular cancer screenings. Now Durán is hopeful about her future because of a neurosurgeon who is willing to perform surgery that will "greatly improve my quality of life." That is why she has launched a GoFundMe to help her cover the expenses.

Durán's post resonated with readers, who were happy to see her treated with such care. @littlefashionstylist remarked, "Even if there is no second date, the fact that you had an amazing day where you were able to just be yourself without being your disability first is everything." Meanwhile, @hey_seymour simply wrote, "Love that for you." Another user, @chriskellybass, seemed to think the connection had serious potential, commenting, “He’s a keeper! When it’s right, the time is meaningless.”

Durán's experience shows how meaningful it can be to find someone who understands life with a disability. In another similar story, a man who had always believed dating someone with the same condition would be a "recipe for disaster" found himself pleasantly surprised after meeting a woman named Linzey. He described their chemistry as "unreal" and said they balanced each other out in ways he hadn't expected. Their first date went so well that they planned a wheelchair race for their next meeting. Both stories are a reminder that there is unmatched comfort in being with someone who shares the same experiences.
