Woman never understood why men stopped dating her friend after a few dates — then a trip to Bali exposed the real reason

After spending a week traveling with her, one woman realized a surprising pattern that may explain her friend's dating struggles.

Spending enough time around one's friend means noticing the little habits and patterns they may not realize about themselves. And sometimes, that says a lot about the person. The hardest part is not recognizing it, but deciding whether saying it out loud would help at all. For a Reddit user (u/OffMyChestAndGone01), those uncomfortable experiences came on several occasions during a vacation. Being together for almost the entire time during their trip to Bali, the poster finally discovered why her friend never went past a fifth date, and yet she can never bring it up. However, she anonymously shared the same over r/TrueOffMyChest on April 19, 2026.

The vacation itself was going perfectly fine at first, but the woman gradually began noticing just how often her friend talked about her cat. In the beginning, it even seemed sweet. Most pet owners miss their animals while traveling, especially during a long trip. But over time, the obsession became harder to ignore. Nearly every conversation somehow found its way back to the cat. Her friend repeatedly FaceTimed the pet sitter throughout the day, spoke to the cat in a baby voice over the phone, and even spent almost three hours shopping for the perfect gift for the feline instead of exploring Bali. Things became even stranger when she casually revealed that nobody is allowed to close doors in her house because the cat panics outside the door

That was when everything suddenly started making sense to the woman. A fourth or fifth date is usually when people begin spending more time at each other’s homes, and according to her, that is probably where things quickly became overwhelming. Her friend had casually revealed that the cat watches her shower and even sleeps on her chest every night. To many people, that level of attachment could easily feel less like owning a pet and more like living in a constant third-wheel situation. "By date 3 or 4, I am guessing the guy has heard about the cat 30-40 times, seen her FaceTime it mid-meal, maybe been to her place, maybe gotten scratched," she remarked. It was enough to suggest that the cat is the "main character," and there's no room for the man.

"She thinks men aren’t trying. Gets upset. Goes back to the cat. Bond gets stronger," the woman said, adding that the cycle repeats, and her friend has no clue. The comment section, filled with cat owners, agreed wholeheartedly with the poster. A bond like this doesn't seem to be healthy. u/Ok-Bridge-1045 said, "I have six cats. I adore them, I’m obsessed with them. This woman still sounds exhausting." u/MiChic21 commented, "The only solution for her would be to meet someone who falls in love with her cat. He might not even need to be into her, and she might not even notice. She would notice how much he loves the cat, and be like, 'It was meant to be, soul mates.'" u/mechshark wrote, "Why is she even dating? It sounds like she doesn’t have free time."

Despite finally connecting the dots, the Reddit user admitted she has no plans to tell her friend the truth. She believed the conversation would only turn defensive, with her becoming the villain for “not understanding” the bond between a pet and its owner. So instead, she quietly listens whenever her friend complains that another relationship failed. The story also left many people discussing how easy it can be for deep attachment to slowly turn into emotional dependence. Because while loving a pet is normal, relationships often get shaky when the person doesn't feel like a priority.
