Woman ordered $300 worth of food and drinks on a first date after he agreed to pay — but she didn’t see his final response coming
Expecting someone to pay for a first date is one thing. Expecting them to cover drinks and food they never ordered, and in some cases weren't even present for, is another entirely. TikTok user Christian, who goes by @christiancooks99, shared one such experience on Monday, June 8, 2026. What started as a seemingly promising first date quickly spiraled into a bizarre evening involving expensive orders and expectations that kept growing. By the end of the night, Christian's response to the situation left viewers fiercely debating who had actually crossed the line.
When Christian arrived at the hotel bar, the evening was already off to an unusual start. Before he had even settled into his seat, his date casually asked whether he would cover everything she had already ordered. Caught off guard, he agreed. However, as the night went on, the requests kept coming: another martini, two dozen oysters, and even a $175 bottle of champagne. Christian said yes to it all, giving no indication that anything was bothering him. Then, near the end of the date, he excused himself to use the restroom. Instead of returning to the table, he walked out of the restaurant and drove home, leaving his date with the bill for everything she had ordered.
The fallout soon followed as the woman kept texting him afterward. She said the bill had amounted to $378. He ultimately sent $50 to cover the oysters and then blocked her. What made the situation particularly striking was that the tab did not even begin with the date itself. Before Christian arrived, the woman had apparently been drinking with a friend who had already left, yet she still expected him to cover those drinks as well.
More surprising was how little effort seemed to go into the actual conversation. Christian described it as painfully one-sided, with his date frequently checking her phone and showing little interest in what he had to say. It was at that point that generosity stopped feeling like kindness and started feeling like an obligation he was expected to fulfill on their first date.
The video drew the attention of people online, with many flooding the comments section with their opinions. @user6458371205394 said, "You were losing me until the end. Excellent actions. Lesson learned." Meanwhile, @jkrzeminski commented, "I wouldn’t have covered the oysters." However, @theoneandonlyviperbitis pointed out, "You shouldn’t have said yes when she asked, but if you say you’re okay with it, that’s when you create your own obligation."
Debates over who should pay on a first date are hardly new. A 2024 NerdWallet survey found that 72% of Americans believe men should pay on the first date in heterosexual relationships. A large study published on SAGE Open found that while many women offered to contribute to dating expenses, a significant number also hoped their offer would be declined. Researchers likewise found that 64% of men felt women should help cover costs, highlighting a disconnect between expectations and reality that continues to shape modern dating experiences.
For many viewers, the most surprising part was not the expensive bill but how openly the expectations were communicated. The story became a reminder that first dates are often less about chemistry and more about discovering how the other person treats people. In this case, however, that lesson arrived long before the check did.
