Sometimes it's the little efforts that speak of the respect they hold for the other person. Jocelyn Thompson (@mizzjaee_ann) was at a kid's birthday party with her child. Present there were also her child's best friend and her mom. Thompson was chatting with the parent when she noticed the woman calling her child by another name. At first, she assumed it was probably her nickname. But when the woman revealed to her the reason, it deeply moved her. Sharing the story with Threads users on Sunday, April 19, 2026, the woman applauded the fellow parent for their act.

Thompson was at a kid's birthday party when she noticed a fellow parent call her child by another name, Nala. Although she knew the kid by another name, the new name struck her. Later, the mother pulled her aside and told her that her four-year-old wanted to be called by she/her pronouns. The woman also noted in a thread that her child one day returned home crying, as she could not understand why she was being addressed as a boy in class, "when she was a girl and had always been a girl." The parent also noted that despite the revelation, she does not love her child less, according to another thread. "Now, Nala is still not solid on the name, but she is solid on the fact that she is a girl. And I love that her parents are fully onboard and supporting her," Thompson wrote.

The mom also noted that she would speak to her kid about the girl out of respect. A research study published on ResearchGate noted that parents are the first people most children spend most time with. The role of the family is very important for children to be properly aware of gender identity and thus be able to develop and optimize their potential appropriately in the future. "Self-gender identification, on the other hand, emerges by the age of 3 years, when children can develop a sense of self-gender identity that is not yet perfect, but can correctly state their gender. When they are between the ages of 3 and 4, children develop the stability of gender identity, and they realize that gender does not change over time," the study noted. By respecting the child's pronouns, the mother imparted an important lesson for respecting your child's identity.

Thompson's story resonated with many Threads users who shared their thoughts on it. @twolittlebirdsknits said, "What a great example of how to honor your child. It’s really quite so easy to do it." @ruth_less_bunny commented, "My cousin's child knew when she was three. The love and support she gets from her parents and brothers is heartwarming." @azkaban22 wrote, "Thank you for listening. Thank you for easing a child who listens. You have done a great job. Being an ally is so important."
