Woman talked nonstop through dinner while her date sat in ‘sleep mode’ — then his deadpan answer about mashed potatoes ended the conversation

The woman had been speaking for roughly twenty to thirty minutes with very little input from her date.

A successful date usually happens when two people are genuinely engaged with each other. However, one dinner date reportedly became memorable for a very different reason. A Reddit user shared a story about overhearing a couple during what appeared to be the early stage of their relationship. The incident, posted under the username u/Corkboy2 on August 14, 2025, described a meal where one person carried nearly the entire conversation while the other barely spoke. As the evening went on, nearby diners could not help but notice the imbalance between the two.

The witness explained that the woman spent much of the meal talking without many pauses. She moved from one topic to another, discussing work problems, friendships, daily frustrations, and many other subjects. The man mostly responded with short comments such as “okay,” “yeah,” or “I get you.” As time passed, he seemed to withdraw from the conversation almost entirely. Then came the moment that stood out the most. When she asked how he liked his potatoes, he simply replied, “In silence.” The remark came after a long discussion about a cooking podcast and was delivered with a completely straight face.

The unexpected answer immediately changed the atmosphere around the table. The user shared how the woman had been speaking for roughly twenty to thirty minutes with very little input from her date. By that point, the observer felt sympathy for the man and even considered moving tables because the nonstop conversation had become difficult to ignore. The man appeared to have entered what the storyteller jokingly described as “sleep mode,” quietly sitting through topic after topic. Whether he was tired, overwhelmed, or simply out of things to say, his brief comment suggested that he had reached the end of his patience.

The response reportedly brought the conversation to a sudden halt. After his answer, the pair sat in noticeable silence for the rest of the meal. There was no further lively discussion, and the dinner wrapped up shortly afterward. The couple skipped dessert, paid the bill, and left the restaurant. The observer admitted feeling somewhat sorry for the woman, believing that talking a lot was probably just part of her personality rather than an attempt to dominate the conversation. Still, moments like these often show how important balance can be when two people are trying to get to know each other.

Not every date leads to a great connection. That was the case in another incident, where a woman named Victoria Hiegel found herself on a very uncomfortable first date from start to finish. Instead of a smooth evening, she was first asked to reach his apartment, where he made her wait before finally coming down. He also asked her to wear a company sweatshirt, which already felt odd to her.

At the restaurant, things became even more awkward when he made a strange comment about the waitress, saying she “really likes meat,” which embarrassed Hiegel. The meal stayed tense as he ordered too much food and behaved unpredictably. After a long and uneasy dinner, she left and decided not to meet him again, calling it the worst date she had ever experienced.
