Woman thought a stranger was simply heading to his car after dinner — then the elevator doors closed and he said something chilling

What first seemed like a harmless conversation turned very awkward once the man made a weird statement.

Feeling safe in public spaces can sometimes change in a matter of seconds, especially when you're alone late at night. TikTok creator Shannon Wilson, who posts as @therealshwilson, said she experienced a frightening encounter after attending a networking event and a friend's birthday dinner. In a video posted Aug. 8, 2026, she described how a stranger approached her in a parking garage, initially making casual conversation before his behavior made her wary.

Wilson said her friends dropped her near the garage around 11 p.m. After two women complimented her outfit, she headed to the elevators, where a man appeared beside her. Assuming he was heading to his car, she chatted with him until he said, “I’m not here for my car. I’m here for you.” With the elevator doors already closed, Wilson said she was surprised and needed a moment to process what he had just said.

Wilson said she quickly realized the man had apparently left his car to follow her into the garage and elevator. Trying not to panic, she told herself to “just go with the flow” until she could find a way out. When the elevator opened on the third floor, she spotted people getting into a nearby vehicle and saw a chance to seek help. She approached a young man and explained, “This man behind me, I don’t know who he is. He followed me here. I’m so uncomfortable.” He agreed to stay with her and checked on the stranger, telling Wilson that “he just hit the going down button.”

Still careful not to reveal which car was hers, Wilson asked the man to stay nearby until she reached it safely. She gave him a thumbs-up as the elevator doors closed, then left the garage, watching for the black SUVs, worried she might be followed. She eventually made it home safely but said the experience left her deeply shaken. She was also thankful that she got help from the young stranger

Wilson said the experience showed how quickly an ordinary moment can turn scary. Despite being alert, she said “even that is not enough” and urged women to stay cautious when alone. Internet users in the comments also showed concern. @mama.beairsy joked, “I would have been like 'Jokes on you, I'm a man '. Make it weird, make it uncomfortable for HIM.” Meanwhile, @barbi_d70 questioned, "Girl, why didn't your friends drop you off at your car?"  Another commenter, @christinew1986, bluntly wrote, “The only thing women have to fear is men.”

Shannon Wilson's experience, unfortunately, is not the only time a stranger has followed an alone woman to her car. In another similar situation, a TikTok creator, Megan, trusted her instincts and saved herself from a stranger. During a late-night Target trip, Megan spotted a man lingering near her car and went back inside for help. As an employee walked her out, she overheard him say, “It’s off. Call it off,” reinforcing her decision to trust her instincts.
