Woman took their extra-legroom seat and claimed everyone was 'mixed around' — one look at the replacement made them take their seat back
Airplane seat swap requests have become increasingly common, but for one passenger, this one request turned heavy. A Reddit user who goes by u/ElkhornOutlaw shared their experience on a connecting flight to Vegas in Salt Lake City. In the post shared on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, they recalled how a woman requested to swap with them, after having already settled in their spot, stating that all the flyers got "all mixed around." What sounded like a harmless exchange later led them to realize that it wasn't as innocent as it seemed.
The passenger explained that they had paid for a Delta Comfort seat with extra legroom. They boarded, only to find a woman already sitting there. When they pointed out she was in the wrong spot, she replied, "Oh yeah, we all got mixed around," before asking them to take her aisle seat instead. Thinking it wasn't a big deal, they agreed. It wasn't until they sat down that they realized why she had wanted the swap. They discovered they were directly across from the bathroom, where travelers constantly queued while the door repeatedly opened and closed. To make matters worse, the middle-seat flyer beside them was "quite large" and took up both armrests, making the already cramped space even more uncomfortable.
Realizing "there was no doubt I'd been had," the passenger decided to speak up. They politely asked for the extra-legroom seat they had originally paid for, and to their surprise, the woman didn't argue or make a scene. Instead, she quietly returned to her assigned seat. Looking back, the traveler said it was the first time they had encountered what they described as a "prospective seat bandit," even though they had taken plenty of flights over the years. The post quickly became relatable. "We? No, lady...you got mixed around... intentionally. This is not the first time a seat swap has taken an unexpected turn. In another instance, a man boarded a short flight from Houston to Austin only to find a woman sitting in the window seat he had booked. When he questioned her, she simply said she was "more comfortable" there, so he agreed to move to her middle seat to avoid causing a scene. But just minutes into the trip, the woman complained that her TV wasn't working and demanded her original spot back. This time, he refused. "No, I'm comfortable here," he replied, leaving her to spend the rest of the journey staring out the window while he enjoyed his favorite TV show on a completely functional device.
