Sometimes, joy and grief arrive hand in hand, making even the happiest milestones feel unbearably fragile. A woman, Megan Cyr, shared how her engagement was overshadowed by loss after her beloved family dog passed away just days before her proposal. That’s when her mother decided to do something special for her. For Cyr, the moment felt like a final, deeply personal gift, one she believed came straight from her late dog. Cyr (@megancyr22) posted a video on Instagram on November 27, 2025, which received over 1.7 million likes.

In the video, she explained that only days before her fiancé, Shelby, proposed, her family suffered another heartbreak as they lost their dog Baz. According to the video, “Baz was just shy of six years old and saying goodbye felt impossible,” read the overlay text. The engagement, she explained, “held so much joy, but also immense grief.” Shortly after getting engaged, she sent a message to her family group chat asking who already knew about the proposal. Her mother’s reply stopped her in her tracks. “This was my mom’s response,” she explained, showing a photo of her engagement ring placed beside Baz.

The image felt like one last gift from Baz to her. Cyr shared that she believes that Baz ran to her dad and told him everything about Shelby because her father never got a chance to know him. She shared, “It breaks my heart that my dad and Shelby will never know each other in this lifetime.” Her father passed away before ever meeting her fiancé, a loss she described as the “saddest truth” she lives with. Baz, whose full name was Basel, entered her parents’ lives just one year before her father died. Over time, the dog became deeply bonded with Shelby, despite the couple living 13 hours away. “Every time we went home for a visit, Baz was glued to Shelby’s side. I loved seeing how much Baz loved Shelby…. And how much Shelby loved Baz.”

In the caption of the video, the woman opened up about how grief has shaped her life. She wrote, “If there’s one thing I feel incredibly good at, it’s crying. Holding back tears is a foreign concept to me, and honestly, I prefer it that way.” She explained that photos, videos, and writing have become her way of staying connected to her late father. After her father’s death, she hoped she would never fall in love again. “The idea of loving someone my dad would never get to know felt unbearably heavy, and it is,” Cyr explained.

“Tell Dad all about Shelby, Baz. I know you will,” she wrote. The post resonated deeply with millions online, several of whom shared their views in the comments. “The picture of him next to the ring was a gut punch,” said @alexandermatt34. “Ugh, that got me good. RIP to both your angels,” @grizzly.bane commented. @m4rrr0w mentioned, “He was there to watch over you until he knew you were safe.”
