Women politely declined a stranger’s offer to buy them drinks at a bar and he walked away — then he returned with one question that stunned them
A quiet evening at a bar can be interrupted when a stranger approaches a table and tries to start a conversation. This happened to Lydia, a Filipino chemical engineer and biologist, while she was spending time with her cousin and enjoying a relaxed night out. A man they did not know approached them and offered to buy them drinks, but the women politely declined. He initially accepted their answer and walked away without an argument. Lydia later shared the experience in a Threads post on August 20, 2026, through her account @ladyaquea, explaining how a later remark from the man caught both women completely off guard.
The man returned later and told Lydia that he liked her and that "I want to take you out." He then asked her if she wanted any money, leaving her shocked by the direction of the conversation. Lydia calmly said that she and her cousin were comfortable paying for themselves. The man responded with insulting remarks about Filipino women and accused them of being interested in money like "gold-diggers." Lydia felt the accusation was unfair because she had already declined his advances several times. Rather than arguing with him, she chose to stay calm and avoided creating a larger scene at the bar.
She expressed how the man's remarks reflected more about his own attitude than about the women he was speaking to. She did not want to continue the discussion, so she asked the bartender to intervene and have the man leave them alone. Her cousin remained by her side as they dealt with the uncomfortable exchange. After the staff stepped in, the women were able to continue their evening without having to engage with the stranger again.
She also explained that the man's behavior seemed especially unreasonable because he had approached them with an offer to spend money and later criticized them for supposedly caring about money. She added, "The irony of being called a 'digger' by a man whose entire approach was 'offering women money' will never not be funny to me." Lydia ended the post by advising that not every drink offered needs to be accepted, and sometimes it is better to simply say no.
A clear refusal should be enough to end an unwanted approach, but sometimes people don't respect that boundary. In another similar incident, a woman dealt with a man who continued pursuing her at a bar even after she made it clear she was not interested. She first tried to keep her replies polite, telling him, “I’m not looking for anything that you can offer me.” When he continued making advances and commented how her long nails could help scratch his back, she finally responded more firmly and told him, “You went to that, and I went to scratching your eyes out.” Her blunt reply finally showed how frustrated she had become after repeatedly being ignored. “Sometimes you have to be a little aggressive when people can’t take the hint,” she remarked.
