13-year-old saved his friend’s life with one phone call — she thanked him decades later and his response left her in tears

When a loved one goes through an unprecedented and unfortunate incident, it’s unbearable and challenging to react and get help. With a decision to make at the spur of the moment, it can be quite a heavy experience. A then 13-year-old, Rand Lopper, was faced with a similar challenge when his friend, Ashley Wright (@_ashleeee), was battling life and death, per PEOPLE. Back then, the confused and overwhelmed teenager made only one phone call after seeing his friend struggling to breathe and it made all the difference. Wright didn’t get a chance to speak to Looper again but decades later, she got her moment to thank him.

The woman shared a video on TikTok revealing the incident. She wrote, “He didn’t call my mom but he did call poison control. We were 13 and he didn’t know what else to do.” Wright recalled having attempted suicide and ingesting a fatal substance. Looper was frightened and worried but dialed the emergency service, who arrived in time and saved her life. “I never spoke to him again, my mom moved schools. But Rand Looper, I think about you every day. Thank you for saving me. I’m happy now. I’m safe,” she added. Wright hoped the video would help her track Looper and right enough, it did. The man commented on the video with a tear-jerking message.

He wrote, “Good to see you happy and well, old friend.” “He gave me my life. I don't think there are enough words I could say to ever thank him enough. It seems so inadequate to say thank you. I'm really grateful for him,” the woman added. Looper, now married, was glad to reconnect with Wright. His wife, Savannah, was also in touch with the woman. She commented, “That’s my husband. I’m glad he was there for you.” Ever since Wright’s attempt, she got into therapy and is reportedly in a “good spot now.” She was also happy to share that she is now a person that people go to for advice.

The woman has gone through several life experiences over the years, uterine cancer being one of them and has learned quite a few life lessons. “We don't have to be tough all the time and act like we have it all together. It's okay to be broken sometimes and that's our job as human beings to just show compassion to other people and help build them back up.” Forever indebted to Looper, Wright hopes to pay it forward and has been doing the same ever since. Her video, too, has provided hope and strength to many struggling with their mental health and other issues.
