Meeting strangers, whether for a date or even an interview, should be done with utmost caution. A TikTok user who goes by Alexis Holly Martin shared one terrifying experience that echoed this message. She recalled an instance from the time she was 19 years old and shared it under her handle, @alexishollyx, on August 5, 2026. She was excited to finally land a job interview with a skincare brand in London, and quickly convinced her parents to drive her there. Her mom randomly asked one question that changed the course of their trip.

Martin was at Manchester University at the time and had been desperately looking for jobs. She applied to one company, and an Asian woman spoke to her before scheduling an interview. Excited, she went through their website and had a look at the products to prepare for the interview. She lived with her family in East Yorkshire, so they all decided to make a trip to London for her meeting. On the way, her mom asked her whether she had run a background check on the organization. She revealed that she hadn’t and decided to do it on the spot. Within seconds, she realized the company didn’t exist.

Her parents were terrified after learning of the situation. The young woman chose not to go to the place, but on further digging, a local revealed that there was no office at the given address; there was only an Asian man who lived there. Looking back at the situation, Martin is glad that she went to London with her family, despite the humiliation she faced at the time.

It was her mom’s simple question that saved her. While she was unsure what was really happening, she feared it was likely a trafficking attempt. The experience served as a lesson. At 19, the idea of landing a job in London, in the field of branding and marketing, and being able to do exactly what she wanted felt like a dream come true. However, Martin urged others to be alert and call out even the slightest odd details. She also encouraged others to prioritize background checks when it comes to such instances.

The prevalence of scams and the increased exposure to danger have compromised the safety of many, making it crucial to be vigilant. In another story, a woman managed to avert disaster seconds before meeting a man on a date because of one Google search. She decided to take a chance and meet him. She mentioned that she skipped doing a background check on him because she was running late. When she informed her mother about the situation, her mother decided to search. To their surprise, they realized the man had charges of battery, strangulation, and breach of privacy. The woman met her date and confronted him about the charges, only to receive a dismissive response. She instantly ended the connection and left.
