21-year-old working as general manager at Chipotle reveals his salary and it has left people mind-boggled

It is commonly believed that people working in the service industry are mostly underpaid. We do not get an exact idea of their paycheck until the workers reveal it themselves. A young man on Reddit, u/Rippyogg, did just that. The 21-year-old takes to the r/Salary subreddit to disclose how much he is earning per month as a Chipotle employee. However, the man's job responsibilities do not include attending to the customers at the counter or serving them food.

The young man shared that he is a general manager at a Chipotle outlet. He shared a screenshot of his monthly income and it stunned the online community. The screenshot image displayed in the post showed that the Chipotle GM earned $10,638.25 in January 2025, while his gross pay was $13,386.32. "First month of 2025 as a Chipotle GM. Realistically, it’s more like 10k gross and 6k take home as I got a 3.3k bonus for last quarter," he clarified in the caption. The comments section of the post was buzzing with curiosity as some questioned how a 21-year-old could become a general manager in a short period.
The young man responded to one such comment and wrote, "Well, I started at 17 and 10 months. I was promoted about a year and one week into Chipotle to a Service Leader. Then, 6 months later, I was promoted to an Apprentice, stayed an Apprentice for one year and one week and was promoted to GM. Been with Chipotle for 3 years and it was my first Job. It gets crazy sometimes." In a second comment, the guy mentioned that the outlet was trying to promote him to CTM based on his eligibility. In a third comment, the young man detailed how he was getting ready for some huge visits at the Mexican fast food outlet and was working over 50 to 60 hours per week.

"Honestly, I never thought I'd made this much off Chipotle but I literally couldn't stand school. I honestly don’t know why. I just couldn't focus and sit in one place reading and copying. It never worked for me. I am learning coding on the side from YouTube as I am trying to make a Minecraft server. I guess I will ride with Chipotle till it fails," the man admitted in a fourth comment. Fellow Reddit users either hyped him for his progress or were stunned by his pay. u/deck65 quipped, "I did the same job. Save as much money as you can and get out of there before they break you mentally. I made it three years and saved a ton of money but my mental health was more important."

u/El_Tapapa added, "Hell yeah, I love to see it. May you rise high with that experience and work ethic." Routine-Wolf-3575 added, "Should’ve picked a different career. 17 years of teaching with a master's degree and I only make 1/3 of what you pull. I’ve always been good at wrapping burritos. Should’ve gone that direction."
