36-year-old wealthy man took her to Chili’s on first date to ‘test’ if she was a gold digger — she handled it perfectly
First dates are meant to be romantic; a chance for two people to get to know each other. However, many use them as an opportunity to test one another under the pretense of getting to know who they really are. TikTok user Niani (@shondarhimesstanaccount) went through a similar experience on one of her first dates. A seemingly wealthy 36-year-old man took her to Chili's to "test" if she was materialistic. The woman immediately shut him down with one remark. Sharing the story on May 14, 2026, she mentioned how she went into the restaurant with him, but taught him a lesson he would remember before pulling off such antics in the future.
Niani was assured that she would love the place, but when her date pulled over at a Chili's parking lot, she became confused. When she inquired, he revealed that he wanted to test how "down to earth" the woman was, and added that he wanted to ensure she was not materialistic. Listening to his defense, Niani was confused and frustrated. She boldly replied, "You didn't have to trick me. I would have told you I am not down to earth, and I am very materialistic." They had a tiff about the place, but the man insisted on going into Chili's as it was all he had "financially planned" for. The duo finally walked in, but Niani had already lost interest and began texting on her phone. She ensured the man knew she was done with him.
The woman then continued to text on her phone and focus on her food. A little while later, she told her date for the night she was leaving as she had someone waiting for her outside, for another date. Agitated by her bold move, he tried to get hold of her, but she didn't sit quietly. She immediately screamed, drawing the attention of the staff, leaving him embarrassed. He had no choice but to let her go. According to The New York Post, there has been a sudden surge in "gold digger tests" during first dates. The test encourages men to be suspicious of women's intentions by requiring them to pay for dates or lie about their financial situations.
Niani's post received several reactions from online users who hailed her for standing her ground. Most of them also called out the date's behavior. @Hmm said, "Chili's is to hang out and gossip with my sister and homegirls." @kamali noted, "First, he said it's a test; second, he said he's not financially planning for another restaurant. Means, he's broke." @detailsaboutdani remarked, "Test? I am nobody's student, been there, done that. No, thank you."
