42-year-old woman expected a LinkedIn profile when she Googled the man she matched with on a dating app — what showed up instead shook her
Online dating requires curiosity, but also a bit of caution. A quick search or even a gut feeling can make a difference. Most of the time, this extra step can often feel harmless. That’s exactly what Isabel Marsh, who also goes by @marshisabel, thought when she decided to run a Google search to learn more about her latest Bumble match. However, what showed up as the very first result was something she probably wouldn’t have imagined even in her wildest thoughts, and it shifted everything in an instant. She shared the same on Threads on February 11, 2026, and it has since gained over 2.8K likes.
They got to talking, and soon exchanged numbers. That’s where things took a turn. As a 42-year-old single woman with WiFi and a healthy sense of caution, Isabel decided to do a quick Google search on the name. She expected something ordinary, maybe a LinkedIn profile or even a random high school basketball article at best. What came up instead stopped her in her tracks. The very first result was an arrest record. She cross-checked every detail she could find. "He has a very unique name. The age matched. The city matched. It was him," she said. As if online dating horror stories weren’t enough already, this added a whole new layer that no one really anticipated.
What makes it even more unsettling is that, up until that moment, they were actually matching each other’s energy. The conversation felt easy, and there was nothing unusual. That’s the part that really stands out: how someone can feel like a perfect vibe match while also having a record, whether minor or serious. One could have never guessed that he had an arrest record from those texts. It brings up a real concern about how little we actually know in those early stages of dating and how much can stay hidden behind a screen. Isabel chose to end her post saying, “Anyway, love is alive and well. Just apparently under probation,” adding a light, almost ironic touch to a situation.
The comment section revealed its fair share of stories, highlighting how risky online dating can really be. @defeliccia_almost_medic said, "We have to be careful! Evil looks the same as good! And sometimes the red flags are attached to a really nice-looking flagpole." @thereal_jenbush wrote, "I’ve definitely canceled first dates after running a background check. Can’t be too careful." @christinedoly also commented, "Thank goodness you searched for him. And you might just win the 'dodged the big bullet' award for Bumble!" Some were curious what the man was arrested for. However, when she replied "violent offender", the case closed. "At this point, I’m not dating, I’m doing background checks as I work for the FBI", were her final parting thoughts. In her case, taking a closer look made all the difference before things could go any further.
