47-year-old woman reminiscing teen years in the 90s is giving fellow millennials bittersweet nostalgia: 'I could cry'

Millennials have presently become grown-up adults. While some are parents, others are even grandparents, and they surely treasure and recount their prime years. Those working in prestigious professional positions and those who set out to make their dreams a reality certainly look back at times when they were adolescents and full of optimism. Similarly, a woman–who goes by @heartbeatonandhomeworkdone on Mumsnet–shared a post about her teenage years back in the 90s. The woman recalled how time was so different back then and every millennial is connecting with this relatably bittersweet post.

The millennial shared the post and titled it, “To think it’s not normal how much I miss the 90s and my youth.” She explained she is 47 years old now and fondly remembers the 90s. Diving into details, she recounted when she was a young teenager and how the era was back then. “I think about it a lot. I have vivid memories of the mid-90s and being 13-17 years old in particular, 15-17 are the highlights,” she said. Everything right from the way she looked, the clothes she wore, her walking, talking and other characteristics caused her to reminisce about the different kind of life it was.

“The naughtiness and excitement of those times, also being in my family home, that amazing group of friends, the laughing, the dancing, how anything seemed possible,” she noted. The 47-year-old mentioned that compared to her life as an adult today, that carefree, young, colorful and energetic period “almost feels like a dream.” The woman called on fellow millennials to share their opinions on what the time felt like for them and whether they missed it now and then. “Does anyone else feel like this? The world seems like such a very different place. I could cry for those days sometimes,” she nostalgically remarked.

She also shared a poll asking, “Am I being unreasonable?” However, 86% of parents supportively voted that she was neither overreacting nor unreasonable. Many commented that they, too, took a walk down memory lane and were hit with nostalgic moments from the time they were dynamic youth. @MyIvyGrows said, “It’s hankering for youth, nostalgia. I have extremely strong, dreamy memories of my time as a 14-20-year-old too. The 90s were particularly good.” @Timeforabiscuit poignantly added, “I thought about it, and though I'd time travel back to that era in a heartbeat, the thing I think I miss is the freedom and optimism, which I can create for myself now.”
RealEagle mentioned, “I get what you're saying. I’m 57 now and I loved the early 80s. 14/16 was my favorite age—my friends and I used to laugh so much and be out dancing at parties. We couldn’t wait to grow up.” Misterlistergelfbride remarked, “I just turned 40, and the last few months, I've been almost obsessively thinking about the late 90s and early 00s. Mainly 2003 and 2004, when I was at university. The people I used to know, the music and clothes, the places we went, the vibe and everything! The world was an easier place then, and I'm sure it's not just because we were young.”
