6-year-old told by art teacher she did her painting 'wrong' but the internet has a different response

Everyone who tries to do something deserves recognition and support. Irrespective of whether or not their work is perfect, right or wrong, they need encouragement to keep trying and not give up. Especially with kids learning while they grow, their creativity needs to be welcomed and encouraged so they can bloom completely. When Gemma Leighton’s daughter, Edie was told that her artwork was “wrong,” people rendered enormous support and love and reverted the harsh criticism. Elaborating on the same, the mom shared a picture of her 6-year-old’s drawing along with the comment and requested the internet to let her know that “art can never be wrong!” Needless to say, the people marvelously delivered! 

Edie had drawn and colored scenery. As a 6-year-old would, she put in as much effort as she could, to the best of her knowledge. The little girl colored a sky, trees, a road and a few other elements as a regular scenery. She used her imagination and creativity to draw and color the elements. Edie chose to make her sky in hues of red and orange and give her road a mix of colors.

Though it seems messy and raw, as a 6-year-old, it was an evidently beautiful effort. However, Leighton mentioned that her teacher said that “she had done it wrong.” “You can’t do art wrong!” the mom exclaimed. Art is defined by creativity and imagination, by trying and experimenting with new potentials and that’s exactly what Edie did. “She was so upset as art is her favorite thing to do. Can you please show Edie some support and like her painting?” her mom wrote.

It was upsetting that a teacher would discourage a student as little as her despite her efforts. However, people came together and overpowered the teacher’s verdict with heartwarming sentiments. @TheJoeWhale wrote, “This is crazy! I had the same thing, only I was just stopped from doing it. What is the matter with people? There is no right or wrong in art. Just perception and the teacher has no right to make this comment!” @Pipdragon added, “Edie, this is an amazing, perfect painting. In fact, I will print it and put it on my wall.” @JohnathanBSmall wrote, “I'm a professional artist and I love Edie's painting. Very expressive! If her teacher knew anything about art, he or she would have noticed that Edie included perspective in the painting, something most 6-year-olds haven't learned yet.”

Part of the reason I studied art in the first place was to learn about the people who ‘did art wrong’- Picasso, Pollock, Basquiat, Kahlo -who ended up changing the whole medium!” @JoJo940Jo remarked, “How I long for paintings to pour out of me the way they do from a 6-year-old! Your daughter's art is fresh and precious.” @AngieGallion remarked, “How can anything about this beautiful piece of art be ‘wrong?’” @vinsinners added, “Her teacher needs her head checked. Art is how it appeals to each soul. And from what I see here, your daughter has a fabulous sense of expression. God Bless her!”
