65-year-old was trying to escape flaming vehicle—a bystander’s quick response saved his life

It’s easy to sit back and watch things unfold, but to go in there and help out takes a lot of courage. The Newton County Sheriff's Office shared a post on Facebook, commending the efforts of Deputy Chardelle McFarlin and a bystander who bravely intervened after noticing an elderly man trapped in a flaming car. While the deputy arrived on the scene, the man was already out there, trying his best to help and rescue the man. The group collectively ensured he was out of the face of danger in time and the situation was well-controlled.

News 11 reported that the 65-year-old man was trapped near the vehicle, which was in flames. The deputy arrived on the scene first and quickly began a thorough search to locate the car and the motorist. As he bravely made his way to do his duty, he saw a bystander also come through. They reportedly spotted the 65-year-old struggling near his burning vehicle and quickly assisted him to safety. He had gotten out of his car but was trapped as the flames spread. In the footage, the duo can be seen carrying the man out to get him as far as possible from the danger.

“Deputy McFarlin quickly located the victim and with help from bystanders, moved him to safety. Corporal Troy Mason arrived shortly after and took over,” the caption of the post read. The man was asked whether anyone else was present in the vehicle or at the scene and confirmation was received that he was the only one there. He was later taken care of by the EMS and was safe. “This quick action shows the everyday heroism of our deputies, many of whose stories often go untold,” the department wrote. They commended the work of many who came together to ensure a successful rescue.

“We want to recognize and thank the efforts of Deputy McFarlin, Cpl. Mason, Covington Fire Department, Georgia, EMS and the Covington (Ga.) Police Department and the bystanders, whose teamwork and care were crucial in providing life-saving assistance. Thanks to the fast and coordinated efforts of all involved, the victim received critical help in time,” the post read. The post later revealed additional details of the bystander and his crucial contribution towards the rescue. Marcus Gaither was reportedly the first to arrive at the scene before the deputy and already got into action.

He “provided critical, life-saving assistance until Deputy McFarlin took over. With permission granted to release his name publicly, we acknowledge and commend his invaluable contribution to this case,” the post read. Many stepped in to render unending thanks to the Gaither, who, despite being strangers, didn’t hesitate to help. Casandra Wyatt wrote, “Marcus Gaither is a true hero. Thank you, Marcus, for your selfless service and bravery, with the support of the responding officer.” Jay Jester added, “Thank you, Marcus Gaither, for risking your life, saving another. True heroism.” Sheyah White remarked, “Great job, everyone. Proud of everyone involved and glad the gentleman will be ok.” Tee Banks added, “Job well done to all who assisted this man.”
