A customer left a $3 tip on a $2 ginger ale—then returned minutes later with a request that stunned the bartender
Every dollar counts when a large part of your income comes from tips. Content creator and actress Jess Val Ortiz narrated an incident she witnessed while spending time with friends. She overheard a conversation between a bartender and a customer that started as a normal order. The story was shared on TikTok on July 27, 2025, under the handle @jessvalortiz. She explained how a woman ordered a ginger ale and left the server a small extra amount, which seemed like a thoughtful gesture at first. However, the situation changed when the customer returned moments later with a request.
Ortiz recalled that the woman had initially ordered a ginger ale, and the employee told her it would cost $2. The customer then handed over a $5 note and said to “keep the change,” leaving the bartender happy about the unexpected $3 tip. Around five minutes later, the woman returned and asked for another ginger ale for her friend. She then reminded the staff member about the extra money she had left earlier and wanted to use it for the new drink. The server explained that the extra cash was already considered a tip. They asked the customer to pay separately for the second drink instead. The lady disagreed and argued that since the drink cost only $2, the remaining dollar should cover the gratuity.
The bartender went on to say that the full $3 had been given as a tip during the first purchase and was not an extra payment for another order. The customer became frustrated after the discussion and eventually decided to leave without getting the second drink. Ortiz shared the interaction, highlighting how she found the change in the customer’s attitude surprising after the initial kind gesture. "I have no words," she concluded the video. She clearly sided with the bartender, believing they shouldn't have to give up their tip, especially when even $3 can make a difference.
Unfortunately, some people do not fully understand or respect the purpose of a gratuity. In another incident, a restaurant worker shared a surprising experience involving a customer who left no extra money after a meal that cost around $400. The situation might have ended there, but things took an unexpected turn when another person from the same group later approached to settle a separate tab. During their conversation, the server learned that the man was a bartender himself and known to be a generous tipper. The moment became even more awkward when the original customer returned and was politely asked whether there had been a problem with the service.
When the bartender friend realized what had happened, he was shocked and immediately stepped in. He then left around $200 on the customer's behalf after seeing the receipt. The unexpected gesture left the customer embarrassed, and he later revised the receipt to leave additional money for the service. While opinions on tipping often differ, the incident stood out because it involved someone dining with a person who understood the service industry firsthand.
