A Denver Broncos linebacker was asked to submit to a routine drug test — and accidentally uncovered a life-saving diagnosis
A routine task can prove to be life-saving for a person. Denver Broncos star Alex Singleton experienced that firsthand when he was asked to submit a drug test report to the NFL's drug testing program. Singleton did a test and submitted his report for evaluation. However, doctors found out that the hormone hcG was higher than normal in his system. Further tests revealed a cancerous tumor of the testicles. He underwent surgery to remove the tumor soon after. Thankfully, his cancer was caught early and the NFL player was given a great prognosis, per Outkick.
"I shared with my teammates and coaches that I underwent successful surgery on Friday for testicular cancer after being diagnosed last week," the 31-year-old player wrote on X, where he goes by @alexsingleton49. "Thankfully, we believe the cancer was caught early with a great prognosis for me and my family. While we are still awaiting some additional test results, I fully expect to return to the field in the coming weeks." When Singleton's result showed elevated levels of the hormone, he was sure that it was not because of any external factors, because he is very careful with his diet. So he consulted his wife and doctor and they decided to book an appointment with a urologist. An ultrasound was conducted and the doctors could confirm that signs were present because of a testicular tumour.
Singleton played against the Las Vegas Raiders a day before he underwent surgery to remove the tumour and was expected to make a full recovery. "I wrestled with sharing such personal information publicly. But the fact is, if it helps one person decide to pay closer attention to their body, then it is well worth it." Singleton highlighted how regular screenings and early detection can save lives and can also save loved ones from a lot of grief. The man was glad to receive all the support throughout his journey and couldn't wait to get back on the field after his recovery.
