Body positivity influencer thought she heard 'cute' from the girl taking her photo on the cruise — until the real remark stopped her cold
Body shaming says more about the person judging than the person being judged. A body-positive influencer, Spencer Barbosa (@spencer.barbosa), who often captures beautiful moments of her life online, had asked a stranger to take a picture of her and her fiancé while they were on a cruise. However, after she returned the camera, Spencer was dumbstruck by the comment she made about her body. Sharing the bizarre story with her TikTok followers on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, she revealed that she was speechless by the unexpected remark, as reported by The Sun.
@spencer.barbosa I literally smiled because I thought she said cute & then I acc died when I realized AHAHHAHA ##girls##trend##wtf ♬ son original - out of context hannah montana
The Canadian influencer was hanging out with her fiancé on a cruise when she wished for a picture with him. She approached a stranger and handed her camera to take their photo. Little did the influencer know that she was about to hear an unsolicited remark. After the stranger clicked the picture of the couple, she handed her the camera and told Spencer that she looked a "little chubby." Spencer, who was shocked by the body-shaming comment, did not know how to respond at first and assumed that she may have meant to say "cute." But when she realized what was actually said, she was left stunned.
In a follow-up video explaining the situation, the influencer revealed that she only expected the stranger to click a photo and not make unnecessary comments about her body. She also noted that she wasn't upset with the comment, since she has always felt confident in herself. "This is your reminder that your words matter and the things you say to other people matter. I'm a very confident person, but if I was a very insecure person, that could have ruined my day," she said. She also noted that most people who say mean things to others usually are just projecting their own insecurities.
In the video, Spencer is seen wearing a figure-hugging white embroidered dress and showing her disappointment after the comment as her fiancé, with whom she got engaged last November, stands beside her. The caption read, "Just asked a stranger to take a picture of us, and she handed the camera back and said, 'You look a little chubby.'" Following her video going viral and racking up over 900,000 likes, many users came in support of the influencer.
@Melanie Artale remarked, "And meanwhile I'm here watching this, thinking how gorgeous you look! That dress is to die for." @Clara Homan mentioned, "Girl, do not worry!! I was at work the other day, and a kid looked at me and said, 'It looks like you have a baby in your belly.'" I do in fact not have a baby, I'm only 18." @A.S penned, "Constant reminder, no matter how much self-mental work we do, the world will never catch up."
