Botched NFL field goal sends man into uncontrollable laughter — and ends up saving his life
Many health problems can exist beneath the surface without immediate signs. A 59-year-old man named Mark Toothaker experienced this firsthand during a quiet evening at home while watching a football game. As reported by 12WBOY, in December 2025, he found himself laughing harder than ever at a missed NFL kick, unaware that the moment would later be linked to a life-saving outcome in a way he could not have predicted.
It turned out he suffered a sudden seizure while laughing, which led to the discovery of a brain tumor. Toothaker was watching the New York Giants play the New England Patriots from his bed alongside his wife. When kicker Younghoe Koo missed a field goal attempt, he burst into uncontrollable laughter as he replayed the moment. He later said, “I’ve never felt anything like this in my life,” as the laughter quickly turned into a seizure that left his wife alarmed. “I felt like I got electrocuted.”
His wife, Malory, who works in healthcare, first thought he was joking but soon realized the situation was serious and called 911. He was taken to the hospital, where scans revealed a large tumor in his brain that had already shifted it about 6 millimeters to one side. “When you hear the news, ‘You’ve got a brain tumor,’ that’s what nobody wants to hear,” she said. Despite the condition, he had shown no warning signs before this incident.
He was later shifted to the University of Kentucky Hospital, where doctors performed surgery to remove the tumor. Thankfully, it was benign, and he was able to return home within a few days without lasting damage. He later shared that in the months before this, he had been traveling often for work, including long drives and flights, without any idea of the risk. Reflecting on the incident, he said, “The kicker saved my life,” explaining that the seizure could have happened any other time while he was driving or traveling.
Now fully recovered, Toothaker feels thankful for how everything happened. He shared that he believes he was “in the right spot at the right time,” calling the experience “a miracle.” The family expressed how fortunate they were, adding that many people are not as lucky in similar situations, especially when such medical emergencies happen without any warning signs. "It all worked out in the end," Toothaker told the outlet.
Even the slightest discomfort can sometimes be the first clue to a major diagnosis. In another story, a man named Sean Sweeney went to get a simple check for neck pain after regular workouts, expecting a minor issue. Instead, tests later revealed a serious form of brain cancer that required a long and complex 9-hour surgery followed by months of treatment. He had been dealing with headaches and discomfort for some time, but the cause remained unclear. After a sudden seizure, doctors finally identified the problem. Despite everything, he stayed hopeful and shared, “Stay positive and try not to dwell on what’s out of your control.”
