Condescending 22-year-old customer lectured them for not paying 20% tip — what he did after left them confused
Calling out something that’s not right is important, especially when it also means standing up for yourself. A Reddit user who goes by u/qelvodr shared a post on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, about how they defended themselves and refused a 20% tip that was added without their consent. While grabbing a bite at the Mexican food truck, they were shocked to see the server’s entitled attempt to get the extra cash and confronted her. A 22-year-old then intervened and lectured them about being respectful before pulling off an unexpected move that was deemed “stupid” in the eyes of the customer.
The person thought the staff skipped the tip request since they were not asked about it. Upon seeing the receipt, they learned a 20% tip was already added without checking with them. They spoke with the worker, and after much persistence, she finally pulled out a few dollars and handed them back. The customer decided to call the owner to inform them about the situation when a 22-year-old overheard their conversation and began giving them an earful. After calling them a “clown,” the young man said he would step in and pay the tip on their behalf. Contrary to his boasting, the youngster paid nothing.
After giving so much unsolicited advice, for him to make a claim and then not pay felt weird. “He launches into this whole thing about how I ‘don’t respect the hospitality industry,’” the customer recalled. He even confidently said that he, a 22-year-old, knew better than they did. For him to boast so much, only to not keep his own word, was ridiculous. The creator of the post eventually left the food truck after a bit, but kept “thinking about how stupid the whole situation was.” Automatic tips being added without customers' approval has become a recent nuisance. According to a report from FOX News, diners are not taking this change well.
David Henkes, senior principal at Technomic, a food industry research firm in Chicago, shared, “Restaurant traffic has been declining, and anything that is perceived to increase the cost does risk some consumer backlash, particularly if it's not well-publicized or if consumers feel there's an expectation to tip on top of the automatic tip.” While many restaurants have adopted this practice ahead of the FIFA World Cup, a few still prefer the old-fashioned method. Robert Mahon, of Mahon Hospitality, said, "We believe guests should tip based on the service they receive, not because of a major event."
Commenters called out the youngster for unnecessarily creating a dispute. u/Ok_Condition3334 said, “Clearly this kid doesn’t understand enough about respect to know it’s both disrespectful and illegal to add a gratuity to the customer's bill without their knowledge and approval.” u/Edcrfvh added, “I wouldn't tip either. And that was fraud. You were right to complain.” u/OkPop9455 remarked, “You should have loudly confronted him to make sure he does pay your tip. That would have been gold.”
