Teenagers can be quite the bunch but they also have some of the most helpful and heartwarming personalities. A teen trio, Colby Simmons and Robert and Kaleb Weymouth, managed to save the lives of a couple in a home in Atkinson on New Year’s Eve, per WABI.TV. The boys were returning home around 1.30 am when they saw a house in flames and rushed in without hesitation to help out. When asked, Colby and the others shared the impressive thoughts that ran through their minds and pushed them to help in the nick of time. The trio were getting to their homes on New Year’s Eve when they saw something suspicious. Initially, it seemed like a bright, orange light, per The Washington Post. “It looked like a sunset and we drove towards it,” Colby recalled.

However, when they got closer, they realized it was a fire. Immediately, they stepped into action and dialed 911 but the boys knew there was more to do. Without a second thought, they decided to get near the burning house and help. “I was like, ‘We got to go in quick,' and then we knocked on the door, nothing. We had to open the door and wake them up,” 16-year-old Colby recalled. They entered and spotted a person sleeping on the couch and yelled, “Your house is on fire.” “He was pretty close to the flames,” Kaleb remembered. The man rushed with the teens to get his wife and a few crucial belongings and leave the house. “They had no idea that their house was burning,” he said.

The trio witnessed quite the flames and recounted wood falling apart, loud bangs and flames destroying everything around. “If we gave it another 20 minutes, the whole house would have been on fire where they were sleeping. I’m just happy we got them out safely and nobody was harmed,” Colby added. Had their quick action not alerted the couple, they could have lost their lives. Robert was glad to have been able to rescue the couple, even if it meant risking their own lives. The boy noted that it took a while for the responders to arrive. The department commended the boys for making the rescue at the spur of the moment. Dover-Foxcroft Fire Chief Brian Gaudet noted, “It changes our response knowing everybody’s out of the building.”

He added, “We were able to salvage some jewelry, some pictures and a few personal items but most of the home was a total loss.” The boys even remained at the scene till 4 am with the couple who were immensely grateful. Gaudet remarked, “I believe if the boys didn’t act when they acted, it could have been a different outcome. They really put their lives on the line. A lot of things could have gone wrong but I really commend what they did to save those people's lives,” per News Center Maine. The boys pointed out that what they did was simply an act of humanity and kindness on their end. "I’d want someone to do that for me, too, if my house was burning," Kaleb said. He left a message for all — “Don’t hesitate. Do the right thing.”
