Couple who had just bought a new home received a chilling ‘not welcome’ note from neighbor — the reason was hiding in plain sight on their front lawn
Although society has become more accepting, LGBTQIA+ people still encounter prejudice and rejection. Instagram user Sarah, who goes by @flannelsallday, recounted on August 7, 2026, that she had just purchased a new house and was eager for a new beginning with her wife. They got the keys on July 1, spent the first two weeks painting and putting together furniture, and then left for a two-week overseas trip to visit family. When they returned, they expected the house to finally start feeling like home. Instead, they found a letter waiting for them in the mail that read: “Not welcome, family town.”
The reason became clear almost immediately. Outside their new home was a small Pride flag. It wasn't hanging prominently from the house or taking up half the lawn. It was simply a small flag displayed outside in their front lawn as an expression of who they were and a signal they hoped might make someone else feel as comfortable in the neighborhood as they had when they were house hunting. Before buying the home, the couple had driven through the neighborhood several times, paying close attention to the flags and signs outside people's houses. They were trying to get a sense of the community and whether it felt like somewhere they could feel safe.
Four doors down, they spotted another family displaying a Pride flag. That gave them comfort and told them they wouldn't necessarily be alone. So, after moving in, they put up a Pride flag of their own. But what made the mail even more disturbing was the handwriting. Sarah wondered whether it had been written by a child or an elderly person, and the uncertainty only added to her discomfort. Sarah revealed in a follow-up video that they filed an official police report, and authorities began investigating the letter, including reaching out to USPS postal inspectors. The couple has also planned to install security systems for their safety.
By the time of the housewarming party, rather than retreating from the neighborhood, the couple decided to invite two neighbors they had already met and, perhaps most importantly, introduce themselves properly to the family four doors down whose Pride flag had initially made them feel safe enough to buy the house. According to another video, after hearing about the letter, neighbors were shocked and immediately offered their support. One even remarked that they were ready to confront the person who was responsible for the hate mail.
Homophobia does not have to take the form of a confrontation to alter the way a person moves through the world. Research on minority stress has found that experiences of stigma, discrimination, and rejection can weigh on the mental health and well-being of LGBTQIA+ people. While meeting the existing Pride flag family, Sarah and her wife were met with warmth. The family eventually came to the housewarming party, bringing their children. Amid a house full of friends and relatives, they told them, “When we drove around the neighborhood, we immediately felt comforted.” The wife began to cry, followed by the couple’s family members gathered in the kitchen. “It meant the world to us,” the couple added.
