Coworker warned server not to expect much of a tip from 6 young men — then one familiar face at the table changed how the night ended

The coworker assumed that since the men were all teens or in their early 20s, a tip would likely not be given.

It’s easy to make assumptions based on appearance, but fate has its way of surprising people. A server named Brenn Bauer, who goes by @brenn.bauer on Facebook, shared a post highlighting one such experience on October 29, 2025. She welcomed a group of six men to the restaurant and served them. Her coworker noticed that they belonged to different racial backgrounds and were young, and suggested that she might not get tipped. However, Bauer later figured out one man’s identity, and it turned the evening into a priceless one.

The server explained that the men seemed to be between 17 and 22 years old, and that was likely one of the reasons her coworker assumed she wouldn’t get a good tip. The bill of $73.07 arrived, and one of the men asked for a single check. Turns out, the person had a connection with Bauer from years ago. When she was in high school and her family wasn’t very welcoming, his mom provided her with shelter and food. It was a gesture that remained close to her heart. When the duo recognized each other at the restaurant, the man decided to tip over 20%. He gave her $110 in total. For the waitress, the lesson from the experience was simple — “Never assume or judge, and always choose kindness and compassion.”

From assuming no tip to receiving not just a generous gratuity but a warm interaction, the evening took a fabulous turn. And commenters loved that for Bauer. @TayCassandra said, “I had a group of teenagers no one else wanted to take. They were sweet. Tipped $38 on an $80." A woman who goes by @michellelynnblanton said she was the mom who showed up years ago. In a pinned comment, she wrote, “That’s my boy, so proud of him! And I love you, honey, and you know as long as I have it, you will never be without!” @nahtanoj.kroy.9 remarked, “A true professional will give their best service to every customer regardless of appearance. This is essential to being a server.”

We can be quick to make assumptions, but sometimes, stopping and looking more closely can make a difference. In another incident, a bartender overheard women sharing their negative experiences with men. As a male himself, he didn’t want to make them feel uncomfortable and tried to keep his distance throughout the night. He was certain they didn’t even want him serving them, but was proved wrong when the bill arrived. The women left a 50% tip on their $60 check, along with a thank-you note. He thought they didn’t want him around, but they were appreciating his service. He assumed they would generalize all men after their encounters, but they knew better. Another reminder to do your thing without judgment and with compassion, and fate will follow with its magic.
