Coworkers kept questioning why vegan woman wouldn’t touch the food at work — one joke finally made her reveal the painful reason
What may seem like harmless jokes to some can feel deeply hurtful to the person on the receiving end. For one Reddit user, a fun meeting at her office quickly turned uncomfortable after her colleagues kept asking questions she never wanted to answer. In the post shared on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, the employee, who goes by u/justthinkhappy, shared how her coworkers attacked her by questioning her food choices, which later pushed her to reveal the painful reason she avoids eating in public.
The employee initially tried to keep things simple. When her manager offered pizza, she politely declined and eventually explained that she was vegan. But later, she walked into a team meeting to find boxes of pizza and a tiny salad on the table. He coworkers repeatedly showered her with questions like why she wasn't eating, why she was vegan, why she didn't want the salad, etc. When one employee made a joke a few days later, she broke down and revealed that she had struggled with an eating disorder her entire life, had been body-shamed, and had food withheld from her as a child. She even mentioned that her sister later died from anorexia. "I have a terrible relationship with food and have a phobia of eating in public," she said, breaking down in frustration.
She also shared that getting mocked for her weight as a child and living with social anxiety had made eating around other people especially difficult. The colleague who heard her explanation was horrified, and immediately felt guilty. What hurt most was that she had already made it clear she didn't want to eat, yet her coworkers kept turning it into humor. They even offered her a Dr. Pepper and sarcastically claimed that it barely had any calories. She was on the verge of tears at the time, but controlled herself until another joke left her overwhelmed. She said she felt humiliated and wished she had simply made up an excuse rather than having to explain something so personal.
Comments about someone's body or eating habits can be more painful than people realize. Research has found a connection between body-shaming and disordered eating. A 2021 study found that people who were mocked for their weight were more likely to develop irregular eating habits. Among young adults, 64.5% of those who had experienced such teasing reported unhealthy weight-control behaviors, compared with 47.9% of those who hadn't. The researchers said the findings show why such jokes and remarks shouldn't be treated as harmless. People in the comments also empathised with her. u/Ohaibaipolar wrote, “Can't people just mind their own business?!” u/GorgeousOpossum also said, “You absolutely need to report this whole situation to HR. This was extremely unprofessional from a leader.” u/mepw remarked, "What they did was really weird, inappropriate, weird and childish behavior."
