Customer told a retail worker he could disrespect her because it was a ‘free country’ — a 10-year-old’s response nearly brought her to tears
Retail workers deal with all kinds of customers, but that doesn't give anyone the right to treat them poorly. Instagram user Anna Milne, who goes by @anna1_milne, shared a frustrating encounter on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, with a customer who told her he could treat her however he wanted because he was in a free country. Just when the interaction seemed to get worse, a 10-year-old girl stepped in with a response Milne never expected. Her small act of kindness left Milne stunned and offered a powerful reminder about treating others with respect.
Milne explained that a customer had been particularly rude to her at work. She recalled, "It's a free country here in Canada, and he can treat me however the hell he wants," insisting that he didn't have to show her any respect. The encounter left her upset, but then something unexpected happened. A 10-year-old girl came up to Milne, gave her a hug, and told her that the man's behavior wasn't okay. She even asked Milne if she could say something to him about his behavior. The little girl's kindness left Milne amazed, especially when she realized that a child had shown more understanding and respect than an adult.

Milne was clearly moved by the little girl's reaction. After being spoken to so disrespectfully by an adult, having a child recognize that the behavior was wrong meant a lot to her. She shared the experience to call attention to how retail workers are often treated and asked people to think about why basic courtesy seems so difficult for some customers. Being a customer doesn't give anyone the right to disrespect the person serving them.

Many viewers shared their own experiences of dealing with rude customers. Some felt that this kind of behavior had become normalized in retail, while others spoke about how deeply such encounters can affect workers. @hotmessperfectionist commented, "Amen, thank you! Choose kindness." @cnorma3 wrote, "The moment retail started saying the customer is always right." @ladybodom added, "The number of times I've cried because of how I've been treated recently."

Rude customers can leave service workers feeling shaken, but a little kindness from someone else can help turn their day around. In one such incident, a diner named Kayla Dee noticed a man yelling at a waitress at a nearby table. When the visibly upset server came over to her, Dee reassured her that she was doing a great job and even asked if she could give her a hug. The waitress accepted, and the simple gesture brought a smile to her face.
