Waitress was shaken after being yelled at by a customer — then one unexpected request from another table left her smiling through tears
Treating people with kindness does not cost one anything. When Threads user Kayla Dee (@ash_kayla_dee) was out for dinner, she noticed a customer seated at the next table yelling at a waitress. The experience was undoubtedly embarrassing, and the employee was left shaken in the moment. When she arrived at Dee's table, she was visibly upset, struggling to get her job done. That's when she received an unexpected request from the woman, and it left her smiling through her tears. Sharing the story on Thursday, April 23, 2026, the woman imparted an important lesson following the incident.
Dee was at a restaurant for dinner when she noticed a man seated beside her table behaving rudely to a waitress. He kept yelling at her, and it affected her deeply. She soon came to the woman's table, and one could tell she was holding back tears. The diner knew she had to step up for her in some way. She first reassured her. "I told her she’s amazing, she’s doing great, and that she’s okay," she wrote. She went on to put forth an unhinged request — "I asked if I could give her a hug," she recalled. The offer completely threw her off; at the same time, it also distracted her from that momentary encounter. "But it got her to laugh, and she accepted. So I stood up and gave her a tight hug," Dee revealed. Seeing the server "giggle" her way back to the kitchen was enough to know Dee had undone some of the damage that the previous customer had done.
Advocating to always choose kindness, the diner shared an important lesson online. According to a 2022 study published in PMC, it found that people often underestimate how their kindness can have a profound impact on others. The study noted that people often underestimate the value their kind gestures can have on others. "Underestimating the positive impact of a random act of kindness also leads givers to underestimate the behavioral consequences their pro-sociality will produce in recipients through indirect reciprocity." Watching the waitress be humiliated by the customer made Dee upset about the situation. While she could have ignored the situation, she chose to offer her something nobody did: a word of reassurance and a hug that melted her pain away. This kindness displayed by the woman may seem like nothing to her, but it must have made the server's entire night.
