Dad demanded action after teen daughter’s ex trashed her car overnight — police response revealed a troubling double standard
While most breakups are personal and emotional, some can escalate into more serious disputes where legal options come into play. No parent would want their child exposed to that kind of situation. However, that’s exactly what happened with Abner Dark (@abnerdark182), a Threads user who shared what unfolded after his eldest daughter broke up with her boyfriend. The morning after the breakup, the daughter discovered her car had been trashed, and footage showed her ex-boyfriend and his friend were responsible. When her father went to file a complaint, the police response revealed clear double standards and left him shocked.
Dark’s daughter was dating a boy from the church for a while, and for “her own reasons,” she decided to end it on a Sunday. The next morning, she found her car covered in “syrup, shaving cream, and dish soap.” Someone had trashed her car, and their cameras captured her ex-boyfriend and a friend. “Our exterior cameras clearly show the boy and a friend doing it overnight,” the father wrote. The father said the local police responded casually and dismissively, brushing it off as a “prank” and even advising him to stay calm and "think about the boy’s future," as he was set to join the Army that summer.
The dad was struck by how often the victim is expected to carry the burden just to make things easier for the perpetrator. “I was left standing there with a 17-year-old who is hurt, confused, and trying to figure out why this is being treated like nothing, and she was told to worry about his future instead of justice,” he mentioned in the post. Her daughter’s car was damaged by her ex-boyfriend simply because she ended the relationship, likely as an act of revenge or to make things difficult for her. Yet, instead of considering filing a complaint against him, the girl's father was asked to be considerate about the boy and his future career.
The father also remarked that nothing makes someone a feminist more than having daughters. He expressed both shock and frustration at how women are often expected to endure suffering quietly and with forgiveness, while those responsible face little accountability and are sometimes even protected from consequences. The police appeared to do exactly that by labeling the boy’s behavior a “prank,” even though it was a clear case of property destruction.
The shared post was liked over 77,000 times, with internet users leaving strong reactions in the comments. @monana_goinky mentioned, “Let his recruiter know what he did.” His chances of joining the army could have been seriously jeopardized if the incident had been reported to recruiters. @vhaizlip remarked, “Maybe he should have thought about his future before committing vandalism.” Another user suggested how the father should deal with this situation. “Do the same to his car. It’s just a prank after all..” wrote @ouidpanda84. Whatever the father chooses to do next, the path he took in the moment ultimately exposed a harsh reality about the double standards at play.
