You never know the impact your words can have on others until you experience it. A Reddit user who goes by u/Arratril was with his 3-year-old at a restaurant when an elderly man approached their table. What he said to him immediately led the dad to tear up. Sharing the heartwarming story on Reddit on July 24, 2025, the young dad expressed how the older man filled a void in his life.

A young dad was at a restaurant with his toddler when an elderly man walked up to his table. He told the dad that he had been listening to them talk and complimented him for being "a great dad." The young man, upon hearing this, felt overwhelmed with emotion. The Reddit user, who did not have a father figure growing up, had always wished to hear this from someone. "It felt like a dad saying 'I'm proud of you' even though he was a stranger," he wrote. After the man left, the dad teared up and expressed regret over not being able to convey how much his kind words meant to him.

Surprising compliments about how a child is being raised can reassure a parent and leave a positive mark. The Reddit user, who grew up without a father to look up to, did not realize that the elderly man's kind words would leave a lasting impact. Hearing that he was doing a great job as a father from an older man felt like an acknowledgment of his efforts as a parent, making it an unforgettable moment for him.

The Reddit story was well-received by internet users, who in turn shared their own experiences. u/Budget_Mission_348 mentioned, "That's so sweet! People often forget how meaningful a compliment can be. Apply this knowledge with your son and with others! Cheers." u/Goudinho99 recounted, "I had this on a plane, a woman said she'd been listening to me talk to my daughter the whole flight and just that wee jolt of validation means the world. Well done, bro!" u/thevelveteenbeagle exclaimed, "Yay for great dads! The world needs more of them."

Being seen by a stranger can remind a parent that their effort is visible. In another story, TikTok user Mami Crissy was approached by an elderly woman during a sports match. The young mother, who was watching the match with her husband and their toddler, was touched when the old woman told her how the family made her feel. She said, "When I come back in another life, I hope you guys are my parents." The unexpected compliment on their parenting filled her heart, as she immediately responded, "I hope you're my baby too." The sweet interaction led the TikTok user to emphasize the importance of spreading kindness and love.
