He was surprised to hear what his son said to the little boy without even giving it a thought.

Kids pick up so much from the way their parents talk and treat others, and those little lessons can shape how they learn to be kind. Tom Morris, who posts on Instagram as @stay.at.home.tom, saw that firsthand when his son met a little boy wearing a dress at the library. His son walked up to him and said something that left Tom amazed. He shared the moment in an Instagram video on October 28, 2026, and explained how much it meant to see his son growing up to be kind and accepting.

Tom recalled being at the library when his son noticed a little boy, around four or five, wearing a dress. Without a second thought, his son walked up to him and said, "I love your dress. Sunflowers are my mama's favorite." It was such a simple, sweet moment, but for Tom, it meant so much more. He was touched by how naturally his son responded, without judging or making the boy feel different. Tom also praised the boy’s parents for letting him express himself freely, saying children shouldn't have to squeeze themselves into boxes adults create for them. More than anything, he felt proud to see his son growing into the kind of person he and his wife hoped to raise; someone who leads with kindness, love, and empathy.

Tom said moments like this remind him that all the effort he and his wife put into raising their sons is paying off. He isn't so worried about raising boys who fit a particular idea of what men should be. What matters more to him is that they grow up to be good, kind, loving, and empathetic people. Parents may not always realize it, but their children are watching the little things—how they speak to strangers, how they react to differences, and how they make others feel. Tom is also challenging stereotypical gender norms himself as a stay-at-home dad, supporting his wife as she continues working, and it seems those values are already shining through in his son.

His little boy showed that kindness doesn't need to come from big speeches or serious conversations. Sometimes, it grows quietly at home and shows up in the sweetest ways. Tom's story also touched people's hearts, and some added their own views to it. @erin.gonz88 joked, "But, did it have pockets?” while @rml6118_ wrote, “It takes nothing to be kind." Meanwhile, @katelandgough shared that her third-grade son was going to dress as Daisy Duck for Halloween, adding, "Let kids wear and be what makes them happy!"

Kids can be wonderfully accepting when adults give them the space to be themselves and others. In another story, a mom overheard her son telling a friend that he didn't have a dad because he had two moms instead. His friend's response moved her. He got all excited and said, "You have two moms? Lucky!" The mom was touched by how naturally the other child accepted her family, without judgment or awkward questions.
