Mother tells her 8-year-old son about her period to challenge old-school gender norms — his unexpectedly thoughtful response leaves her proud
It's 2026, yet women are still expected to adhere to patriarchal norms established centuries ago. A mother did not want her 8-year-old son to inherit this stereotypical mindset, and so she decided to challenge the misogyny. One mother on TikTok, who goes by @worldsokestmom ,shared a video on Friday, September 4, 2026, revealing her son's heartwarming reaction when she informed him that she was on her period. The creator described experiencing a heavy, uncomfortable day filled with pain and fatigue, and she was feeling quite gross. But her young son surprised her with his mature response.
In the video, the mother shared that she was reading a bedtime story to her children when she told them that she wasn't feeling well because she was on her period. She apologized for possibly lacking patience while reading the story. However, what happened next was unexpected. Her 8-year-old son responded empathetically and brought a blanket and placed it on her lap. He asked, "You want to feel cozy, Mom?" and she replied, "Thanks, babe. I sure do." The mother of this young boy felt immense pride to see her son's thoughtful gesture.
Her son sat next to her and placed his little hand on her lap. Despite having ADHD, which makes him prone to constant movement, he still sat beside her, comforting his mother as she read. After the story, her son even filled his mom's bottle with water and ice before going to bed and placed the bottle on her nightstand. As she had forgotten her phone in the room upstairs, he went up to fetch it. He then plugged his mom's phone into the charger and asked if he could get anything else for her before they went to sleep.
The mother expressed her gratitude for her son's acknowledgment of her discomfort and his caring actions. She told her son how thoughtful he was during this situation. The kid even hugged her after saying, "I love you." She called adult men out, advising them to take notes from her 8-year-old son, as he recognized that she was not feeling well and actively sought to ensure her comfort without being asked. She felt proud to see her son display such emotional awareness.
Before ending her video, the creator urged parents, "Teach your son to be a non-patriarchal, non-misogynistic, caring, thoughtful, emotionally expressive, and emotionally mature man." She emphasized the importance of teaching her son not to play the victim or blame others for his feelings. Captioning this video, she wrote, "Brick by brick breaking down misogyny." This incident highlights the importance of parents instilling good values in their children from a young age and maintaining open discussions about all topics.
Talking openly about periods can break the stigma that has made menstruation a taboo subject for generations. In a similar incident, a 12-year-old boy once asked his sister about periods after learning that a girl in his school had started hers. He wanted to ensure he wouldn’t embarrass her and thought he could help if she felt uncomfortable. That conversation didn’t go well when their father overheard them. The father told his son that periods were topics only girls needed to discuss. However, the boy swiftly silenced his father with a brutal statement: “That’s why Mom divorced you.” The sister noted how their father often treated periods as "disgusting," but this straightforward reply from his son silenced him.
