Children often struggle to distinguish right and wrong, which is why it's essential to instill values in them at an early age. When parents learn that their child has faced hurtful remarks, it can evoke feelings of worry and concern. Courtney experienced this when her six-year-old daughter came home and shared something rude a friend had said about her father. The content creator wanted to explain the situation and protect her family, but her daughter's reaction left her deeply moved. She shared the experience in an Instagram video posted on October 26, 2026, under the handle @oursignedworld, reflecting on how the conversation changed her own perspective.

Courtney explained that her family was a deaf and hearing family. Her husband was deaf, while she and their two children could hear and communicated with him using American Sign Language. When her daughter revealed that a friend had called her father weird, the mother immediately wanted to defend him and explain why he communicated differently. Instead, she asked her daughter how the comment had made her feel. The little girl calmly replied, "It doesn't make me sad because she doesn't know Dad. She doesn't know how fun and special Dad is." Courtney was so touched by this answer that she began to cry. When her daughter asked why, she told her, "Because you're wonderful. You are absolutely wonderful."

The child's response showed how she felt no shame about her father and did not let another person's opinion change how she saw him. Courtney admitted that she had worried about the challenges her children might face as they grew up with a deaf parent. She expected to help them handle questions, judgment, and situations that other children might not experience. However, her daughter's response reminded her that children can understand acceptance in ways adults may overlook. The little girl focused on the loving relationship she shared with her father instead of feeling embarrassed by what made their family different. Courtney expressed how she was worried she would have to "teach her how to navigate moments like this, but somehow she ended up teaching me."

Children can sometimes surprise us with their unexpected maturity. This was clear in another incident when a mother learned how her 10-year-old daughter had comforted a friend who was hurt by a classmate's cruel remarks. The boy had made fun of the girl's teeth and called her names, leaving her upset. Rather than joining in or ignoring her friend's feelings, the young girl chose to reassure her. Her response later left her mother amazed at how thoughtfully she had handled a difficult situation.

The girl told her friend, "That's not about you; that's about him. You don't have to worry about that." Her mother was surprised that someone so young could offer such meaningful advice. The incident also reminded her of her own childhood, when a bully had made hurtful comments about her forehead and told her she "didn't look good in hats." She admitted that those remarks had stayed with her for years. Seeing her daughter help someone else avoid feeling defined by cruel words made her proud. The experience showed how a child's kindness and understanding can help another child feel better about themselves.
