Dealer refused to refund couple after tricking them into buying 'worst car'—their reaction was an epic success

There are many people out there who engage in fraudulent practices and the last thing anyone wants is to become a victim of it. While falling prey to scams may not be as much in our control, we can choose to act smartly and respond in a way that gets us out of the soup. A man–who goes by u/DeuxExPir8Pete on Reddit–revealed that when he purchased a car with his wife, he was tricked by the dealer and given a poorly working model. When the salesperson refused to refund the couple, he received an epic reaction from the duo.

The man explained that he had gone to purchase a second-hand vehicle. “I had a look round the car: not too much wear," he said, adding that there was no such damage that could affect the working of the car. "Took it for a test drive and it was okay. My wife liked it, so we paid part cash, part card,” he wrote. However, a few days later, while driving home, before they could reach, they realized “something was wrong with the car.” “I took it for a drive and yes, it had low power, sounded terrible and didn't feel safe.” the man recounted. Unsure about the vehicle, they called the dealership again but received an “unpleasant” attitude.

The man took the car to a trusted local mechanic. “We got the report. It ran to two pages. I will summarise using the comment the mechanic gave us when we picked it up— ‘Mechanically, this is the worst car I have ever seen,’” the man said. They decided to return the car and get their due refund per the policy. However, the salespersons were reluctant to address their issue and refused to give them their money back. Worried about what might follow, the couple chose to insist. After hours of reasoning, discussion and much inconvenience to them and their young kids, the couple came up with a plan.

“One of them left to serve people who had walked into the yard and he came in with another couple who were interested in a car. They heard us talking, I slyly shook my head at the couple and they backtracked and left,” the man remarked. The dealers were now “enraged” at the customer’s behavior and knew they had to get rid of him. This continued for around 5 hours. After much waiting, the woman asked her husband what the plan was. “I'm not leaving. I think I'll just call the police and get this sorted. Even if I have to stay here until tomorrow morning, we are getting our money back,” he confidently replied.
The dealers overheard the conversation and realized that the couple was not going to budge. “We go back in and he is counting out cash on the table. ‘We will give you a full refund if you don't mention this car on any review site,’” the post read. Within 5 minutes, the couple got their dues refunded. “We could not believe that after 5 hours of back and forth, crying kids and belligerent salesmen, we had won,” the man noted. u/MRicho said, "More consumers need to have the resilience you both showed. Well done." u/ccl-now added, "Well played all of you!"
