Delivery nurse seemed unimpressed by the secret names parents chose for their twins — but the mom’s response won hearts online
Choosing one's baby names is an exciting affair for a couple awaiting their child's arrival. But sometimes, it's important not to publicize one's choices. When new mother Brinley Bywater Barton (@brinleybbarton) was expecting twins, she and her husband had already decided what they would name them. However, when the delivery nurse learned the names, she seemed unimpressed by what the parents had chosen. But that did not hurt the mom, whose response has now won hearts online. Sharing the story with her Instagram followers on April 1, 2026, the woman noted that not every opinion needs to be considered.
Brinley and her husband had chosen their baby names even before she became pregnant. When they later found out that they were having twin girls, they decided to name them Penelope and Eleanor. However, during labor, when the delivery nurse asked what names they had picked, the couple excitedly shared them, even though they had earlier decided to keep them private. Unfortunately, the nurse's reaction was not something the mother was expecting. Brinley noted that the nurse responded with a flat "Oh" when they announced their names, but it did not affect the couple, as they chose to stick with what they had already decided.
"Everybody has an opinion on a name; some people love it, some people hate it. If you tell people, and if they give you a reaction that you're not expecting, it might affect you, even though it shouldn't," Brinley said. She added that other people's opinions should not carry much weight, because ultimately, it's their child and the names they love are what truly matter.
According to a report by the BBC, many parents try to run their name choices by their family and friends to get their opinions. According to Social psychologist Dr. Elle Boag, people fear naming their children, which may be after "an aristocrat or a criminal." "If you have a negative experience with someone, you will associate the characteristics of that person with the name and project them onto someone with the same name," the researcher noted.
However, the report added that, unlike older parents, new parents are embracing the names they chose for their kids, encouraging the idea that people should be judged as individuals rather than by their names. When Brinley and her husband noticed the nurse's reaction, they could have felt insecure or uncertain. Instead, the couple stood by their choice, showing they were not going to be swayed by societal expectations.
