Dogs know and understand their owners well, especially when they’re dealing with something. Their ability to sniff out if their pet parents are troubled is rare and wholesome. A mom shared a glimpse of her dog, Chewy (@chewythenewfoundland), experiencing a similar feeling for her son. The video captured the dog abruptly refusing to let the boy go to school in the morning. His behavior seemed unusual and reluctant. Nevertheless, the mom sent him to school and was surprised to receive a call from them a few hours later, only to realize her dog was right all along. The video captured the pet dog reluctantly sitting on the pavement and refusing to cooperate with the boy.

As he held the canine’s leash and tried to convince him to move along, Chewy avoided eye contact and seemed off about something. When the boy persisted, he disapprovingly sat himself on the ground, insistent that he didn’t want to move. The mom wrote in the text overlay that it was as if the dog was trying to say, “Mom, I don’t think he should go to school today, I have a bad feeling.” The woman didn’t dwell much on Chewy’s behavior. Like any owner, she might have thought that he was feeling clingy and possessive. 4 hours after the boy went to school, the mom received a call to come pick him up.

The mom shared a glimpse of her dog in the backseat, giving an “I told you so” side-eye to his mum, while the boy was in the front seat, out of school. He had to come home early due to a stomach bug. “I was trying to tell you, mom,” she wrote in the caption. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), dogs can detect when something is off with their owners. Dr. Mary Burch, a certified applied animal behaviorist and the director of the AKC Family Dog program, noted from her learning and experience as a pet parent that dogs do understand health and illness. Recalling an instance with her dog Wyn, Burch mentioned that when she was having a long-term illness, her dog was able to detect the sudden increase in her heart rate and rushed to her. He then lay his head on her chest for a while before the rate got back to normal and then returned to his space.

Dogs have an exceptional sense of smell and hearing, so when sickness causes a change in the scents of human beings, dogs understand it. “Considering that dogs can detect cancer, diabetes, and seizures, we have every reason to believe that our dogs know when we are sick. Illness results in chemical changes in the body, as well as, changes in hormones and these changes can be detected by the dog’s extraordinary sense of smell,” Burch noted. In other glimpses, the mom shared how Chewy has been protecting and looking after the family like a responsible member himself. One of the videos captured him confused and worried about seeing his family jump into the water while on vacation.

Another video revealed that the family had no less love for the canine. One of the members opted to take a 16+ hour drive instead of boarding a plane so that Chewy could safely travel with them. Among the viewers, @pics_of_random-things said, “Dogs know when something is wrong. He knew he wasn’t feeling well and that’s why he lay down.” @oliver.the.newfie added, “Chewy knew he had to take care of his baby.” @diamondccut remarked, “Chewy’s looking like, ‘I told you not to, you got me in this back seat for some mess we could have avoided.’”
