Elderly customer demanded a waitress of a specific ethnicity and the manager complied — but the server he picked refused to play along

She expected the manager to stand up for his staff, but quite the opposite happened.

Some customers make a server's job harder than it needs to be, but this customer took things to another level. One restaurant waitress, who goes by u/Inevitable_Advice269 on Reddit, shared how an older woman demanded to be served by someone of a particular race and even used a racial slur against a staff member. In a post shared on June 30, 2026, she explained that when the manager chose to accommodate the customer, she decided she wasn't going to play along. What she did next was exactly how the customer should have been treated.

The waitress mentioned that the older woman, who was with her son, had made it clear to the hostess that she didn't want someone of the same ethnicity serving her. She even used a racial slur to make her point and said, "I only want a (certain color) person to wait on me.” Complying with her demand, the waitress who posted the story was assigned to her. The server only learned about the incident after taking the woman's order. The manager had advised her to go "above and beyond" for the customer. But after learning about her demand, the server was stunned and said she refused to wait on the woman at all. The manager took over the table, but the server was disappointed that he chose to keep the customer rather than stand up for the staff member she'd insulted.

The woman continued to make things difficult for the staff, sending her food back several times and complaining about everything from the amount of ice in her drink to the service she received. According to the server, the manager kept accommodating her requests, even after learning how she'd treated the hostess. The server was especially frustrated that the manager seemed more concerned with keeping the customer happy than standing up for his employees. She turned to Reddit to ask whether refusing to serve the woman was wrong and whether the manager should have asked her to leave instead.

Many people backed the server's decision. One user, u/TG1883, wrote, "You are not wrong; thank you for sticking to your guns. Your manager is weak and a follower." Another commenter, u/cinereousunicorn, was just as firm, saying, "Absolutely not. A smart manager doesn’t let their staff get abused." Meanwhile, u/JumpingSpider97 argued that the manager should have refused to serve the woman altogether, adding, “Good on you for sticking up for your coworkers.”

Standing up against a customer who is racist or uses slurs toward a waiter needs to be the norm. In another café story, the café staff stood up for a staff member when a customer was rude to her. A waitress couldn't make out a customer's order because the woman was mumbling. When the waitress politely asked her to repeat it, the customer refused and called her "stupid." Another server stepped in, told the woman she couldn't speak to staff that way, and asked her to leave. The customer fired back with another insult, but the café workers stood together and showed her the door. Restaurant workers shouldn't have to put up with rude customers just to keep the peace.
