Rude customer told waiter to leave his personal problems at home — his heartbreaking response silenced the table and earned him an unexpected tip
A busy shift can be stressful, and when some customers make you feel like you’re doing everything wrong, it is better to find ways out of the conversation. Dean Redmond, who posts on Instagram as @deanredmond, shared an Instagram story on August 18, 2026, about serving a group of 18 people who kept brushing him off, then complained that he wasn’t attentive enough. But when one customer told him to leave his personal problems at home, Dean’s response changed the mood at the entire table.
Dean said the group made him feel like he was interrupting them every time he approached the table. One man repeatedly called him over for small things, from extra lemons to complaints about flimsy paper straws. Then, as Dean dropped off the bill, the rude customer told him, out of frustration, "Just a little hint, kid. Don’t bring your personal problems to work." Dean looked him in the eye and replied, "I’m sorry, sir. I didn’t know you could tell, but my mom passed away just three days ago. And the only reason why I’m even working is that I’m the one who has to pay for the funeral." The entire table went quiet, and one woman snatched the check away, telling the man, "Enough." The rest of the group turned on him, and about 20 minutes after they left, someone even came back to give Dean an extra $20 tip.

The trouble had started almost as soon as he began serving the group. Halfway through the meal, the customer who was calling Dean repeatedly suddenly decided he wasn’t attentive enough. When Dean checked in about the food, the man laughed and complained that a restaurant of that quality should have better service, even though he kept telling Dean he didn’t need anything whenever he came by. Dean apologized and explained he’d been helping other tables, but the man kept insisting nothing was wrong whenever Dean checked back. But when the man came up with the unwanted advice, Dean decided that he had had enough and chose to lie. It worked pretty well for him. He also shared in the video that his mother had already passed away, and she is the one who had taught him the smart strategy.

While sharing his experience, Dean encouraged the viewers to lie to their rich customers who are not being nice. Many viewers loved how he handled the situation. Instagram user @theatriclymelting summed it up perfectly, writing, “Ik ur a waiter, but you SERVED." Others couldn’t get past the customer’s complaints in the first place. @liam_redmond wrote, "Wow, paper straws being flimsy…rocket science." @saikkos wrote, "I know you did your mama so proud."

Working in restaurants often means having to deal with unpredictable customers. Dean wasn’t the only server to deal with a customer who seemed determined to complain. In a similar story, a diner repeatedly griped about his mojito arriving without a salt rim, even after the server offered to fix it. At the end of a $118.93 birthday dinner, he left just over a dollar as a tip, telling the server to keep the change. But the server returned the money, saying, "I’m going to get you your dollar on 120; hold on." The customer was so offended that he demanded to speak to a manager, who reportedly laughed at the complaint.
