Ex-robber-turned-security-expert reveals why a family should never put calendar up in their kitchen and it's mindblowing
The climate change has been affecting our lifestyles over the past few years. According to a 2019 segment on "This Morning," the summer months of the year were brutal. As heatwaves swept through European countries, many households restored to open their doors and windows to let their interiors cool down. But this gave rise to a legitimate security concern for people as opening windows nonchalantly gave easy access to burglars. That was when ex-burglar-turned-security expert and motivational speaker Michael Fraser appeared on the chat show to issue an important public service announcement.
According to Fraser's Facebook page, he became one of the most respected and well-recognized security experts in the U.K. after he started co-presenting BBC's "Beat the Burglar." As a youngster, Fraser received a custodial sentence after getting arrested over a burglary. However, he turned his life around and instead of pursuing a life of crime, he turned to educate and make people aware of safety practices. So far, his valuable advice helped people prevent break-ins at their homes and in many other incidents.
While appearing on the British TV daytime show, Fraser mentioned how hanging a calendar in the kitchen or near the window can put a household at risk of getting robbed. "A lot of people put calendars up in their kitchen and the calendar is up with the dates on, mentioning when they are out," he said on the show. "What they don't realize is that the burglar can read. He will come round the back and have a look through. If he sees that you're not there, he'll come back."
"It's also a dead giveaway that you're not security conscious," Fraser stated. "We all have calendars but don't leave them by the windows where they can be seen." He left another important reminder for people who are always tempted to share their pictures on social media. "Everyone does it," Fraser sighed. "You are giving burglars a perfect window of opportunity to do serious damage and take their time doing it because they know there will be no one inside." Along with that, he dropped some basic tips for people such as putting double locks on the front doors to deter burglars. To prevent "letterbox fishing," Fraser advised everyone to put up a cage around their letterboxes to safeguard important documents that arrive by mail.
Fraser gave an important tip on using security cameras around our houses, to keep the burglars at bay during those carefree summer months. He brought out a special type of CCTV device that he had installed in his own home too. "What it does is, it picks your image up as you're coming to the property. I could be in South Africa and I could still get an alert on my phone. This will alert me and I can say, 'What are you doing?' through the speakers on the device," he explained as he held up the monitoring device. The hosts concluded the segment by thanking Fraser for his valuable input at the end of the interview.
