Exhausted mom heard a lullaby while her rushed to calm her crying baby. When she realized who was singing — she broke down
An already exhausted mother, Lexie Gilmartin, was bracing herself for another long, sleepless night after she heard her baby cry. But when she walked into the room, her fourteen-year-old daughter was already there, gently rocking the chair, humming a soft lullaby. Overwhelmed by the gesture, she took to Instagram and shared a video of her daughter singing the baby to sleep. In the post, which has garnered over 229,000 views, Gilmartin (@thegilmartinfamily) shared how she had spent her evening putting her three children to slumber.
In the caption of the post, she wrote, “Each night, I put my youngest three to sleep. I’d rocked, nursed, and put down the baby in his crib. Then I went and lay with my toddler until he passed in his bed. I’d finally gotten to lie with my 5-year-old (who shares a room with her 10-year-old sister).” A couple of minutes after she told her daughters goodnight, she heard her baby cry.
She immediately got up to rock him back to sleep and let the girls know she would return shortly. But when she went to the room door, she saw her daughter doing something which did not really surprise her, but made her proud. She admitted that she was not shocked when she found the teen singing her baby brother to sleep.
Narrating the full scene, Gilmartin added, “As I approached my door, I didn’t hear any more crying but instead singing. I peeked in to see my teenager rocking her brother and singing the same song that always calmed her as a baby... she just smiled when she noticed me and gave me the thumbs up, queuing that she had it under control.”
“I know what some will say… but you’re wrong, she’s not raising him. She’s been raised in a family built on love, a unit that takes care of each other well. I assure you, this is not in her job description as a 14-year-old,” she added, talking to her followers, anticipating criticism. She mentioned that while she was proud of her daughter, she was equally proud of herself for raising a girl who was developing into an exceptional person.
Her followers resonated with her post, praising her upbringing and her daughter’s compassion towards her younger siblings. “I think this is amazing. Nothing wrong with everyone helping out,” commented @billieelaine_, while @colin.r.palmer recounted a similar experience with her kids and said, “So cute! Our oldests do a little sleeping game with our 1-year-old, and it's the cutest thing.” “That’s fabulous! You’re raising a great young lady there. Good job, Mama. Love conquers all!” expressed @ruisiseamon. @maddmarimouse, sharing her story as an elder sister, said, “She's a good older sister. I helped with my younger siblings when my mom and dad brought them home. I would never change any of it.”
