Family went to the shore to scatter grandma’s ashes — one stranger quietly stepped back, and what the photo captured moved them to tears
Respect for the dead can extend beyond personal connections, even when the person is a stranger. A woman named Kylee Mechele Matheny shared one such story in a Facebook post on Monday, September 14, 2026. She and her family had gone to Point No Point Lighthouse in Hansville, Washington, for a farewell ceremony for her late grandma. As she captured her dad holding the urn before he could scatter the ashes, one more gentleman stood out in the photo. His simple gesture touched her family’s hearts.
Kylee and her family walked along the seashore as they prepared to honor her grandma's memory. While the world was carrying on with life as they witnessed an important moment, one stranger showed compassion. In the photo captured by the woman, the dad is seen walking toward the water to say goodbye to the deceased family member. The man behind him happened to be fishing, and as soon as he saw them walking over with the urn, he pulled in his line and stood at a distance. He took off his hat as a sign of respect and held it to his chest, joining in the family’s grief. When the woman later looked at the picture, she was moved to tears, seeing his thoughtfulness.
She noted how he could have simply carried on because he had no idea what was happening, but from the little he knew, he decided to be empathetic. “It helped make that day feel complete,” she wrote. It felt like a full-circle moment, because Kylee’s grandma loved people. “She could make a friend anywhere she went, and she had a way of making strangers feel like they weren’t strangers at all,” she recounted. She even added that if her grandma were in the man's place, she’d likely have done the same. The kind gentleman went about his day, but according to Kylee, some magic from above blessed him for his gesture.
In a comment, she revealed that minutes after they scattered the ashes and the man got back to fishing, he made a large catch.
