Passengers often frown upon requests to swap seats during flights, since most of the time the seats offered are more inconvenient than the ones they booked. One passenger who goes by u/smrdwnnow on Reddit made what many would consider a "golden" offer, asking fellow travelers to take his upgraded first-class seat after he was separated from his autistic son. However, the travelers' reactions left him confused. On January 17, 2026, the father shared how difficult it was to find someone willing to switch with him.

The father was traveling with his autistic son and had originally booked a middle and a window seat. Because the flight was full, the airline upgraded a few passengers to first class to accommodate four other passengers who were on standby. The father, who needed to stay beside his son due to his unpredictable behavior, had already removed both himself and his child from the upgrade list. Despite that, the system involuntarily moved him to a first-class seat, while his son remained in his window seat in economy. He assumed he could ask another passenger to switch seats with him so he could sit with his son. However, the first few people he asked declined.

"Person 1 (10E): Said no. Didn't give a reason, just wasn't interested. Person 2 (10D): They said no because they were traveling with the three people across the aisle and didn't want to be separated for a 3-hour flight," the post read. The man was surprised that people turned down his offer. Eventually, another passenger in front of his son's row happily agreed to switch seats. The whole experience left the man confused about how unpredictable people's behavior can be.

Many users reacted to the post. u/smolhouse mentioned, "That middle seat person was either flying for the first time in their life and had no concept of seat classes, or they reflexively said no and then kicked themselves the whole flight." u/First-Satisfaction92 remarked, "Maybe 10E read too many Reddit posts about stand your ground and say no to seat swap requests and took it to heart." u/WDWKamala noted, "At least you came with a compelling offer. It's a good reminder that our value systems don't apply to others."

Not everyone would turn down a first-class seat swap. In fact, some would even demand it from another passenger. In another story, Instagram user Ishika Yadavalli had gifted herself a first-class ticket for graduation and was excited for her trip when she encountered a fellow traveler who demanded she give up her seat for her daughter. Despite politely declining the request, the woman continued to pressure her, suggesting that she was "young" and should be more understanding. The situation eventually required intervention from the cabin crew, leaving Yadavalli surprised by the passenger's entitled behavior and her insistence on claiming a seat she had paid for.
