Flight attendant warns passengers never to eat directly off airplane tray tables — says one gross mid-air habit by parents is the reason
Airplane tray tables may look like a convenient place to set your meal, laptop, or drink, but one flight attendant says there is a reason travelers might want to think twice before eating off them, according to the New York Post. TikTok user Janae, who goes by @abovethecrest, shared a behind-the-scenes warning on August 12, 2026, about what she has seen passengers do on those tiny tables. Some of it involves parents using them in ways other travelers would probably never expect.

According to Janae, one of the major reasons she avoids eating directly from airplane tray tables is that parents sometimes use them to change their babies' dirty diapers. "Why do people change their kids' dirty diapers on tray tables where people are going to be putting their stuff and eating?" she asked. She said she will cover the surface with a trash bag if she has to use it, because even wiping a tray with a disinfecting wipe doesn't necessarily mean it's immediately clean. Janae pointed out that, according to the product guidance she cited, the surface needs to remain wet for 10 minutes for the disinfectant to work as intended.
The tray tables aren't the only thing that has made Janae question passengers' hygiene habits. She said people will sometimes hand flight attendants trash, such as dirty diapers or used airsickness bags, apparently expecting the crew to throw them away. Janae said she won't take a dirty diaper, even with gloves, but will instead give passengers a trash bag so they can dispose of it themselves. What seems to surprise her even more is how offended some passengers become when she refuses to handle their waste.
The flight attendant also had a warning for anyone who thinks the airplane bathroom floor is just a little wet. She said passengers sometimes walk into the lavatory completely barefoot, while others go in wearing only their socks. Her rule of thumb is simple: "If it’s wet, it’s not water." She said some passengers brush off the comment, but she has seen enough to make her wary. Janae also recalled a passenger who used the restroom while everyone was deplaning. She heard the toilet flush and the door open just seconds later, making her suspect he hadn't washed his hands. When she pointed out the sink, he simply replied, "Nah, it’s fine."
