Getting off a delayed flight can become stressful when passengers have only minutes to catch their next connection. A Reddit user recently shared a simple approach a United Airlines flight attendant used to make the process smoother. In a post dated August 12, 2026, Reddit user, who goes by u/Ill-Anteater-6724, described how the crew handled passengers with tight connections and said the method worked surprisingly well.

The flight had been delayed by more than an hour on its way to San Francisco, leaving some passengers with less than 30 minutes to make their connections. As the plane approached SFO, the flight attendant announced that she would call out the seat numbers of those passengers. She asked anyone whose seat number was called to press their call button, while everyone else was told to remain seated until those passengers had moved toward the front. According to the Reddit user, around 20 passengers pushed their buttons, and once the seat-belt sign was off, they were able to leave without repeatedly asking other passengers to let them through.

The poster praised the crew for the idea, writing, “It worked!” They added that if the procedure wasn't already company policy, “it should be.” The unusual deplaning strategy sparked a discussion, with some users impressed that passengers actually followed the instructions. u/YinzerInEurope wrote, “I can’t believe everyone listened.” Another user, u/9Nine2Nine9, said, "They tried this on a flight I was on. Nobody listened, and everyone reverted back to old-fashioned yelling to let people through.” Meanwhile, u/ASULegal_Eagle supported making the practice standard, saying, “This is the way every airline should be!”

If the flight attendant hadn't stepped in with a smooth strategy, the passengers might have been at risk of missing their connecting flights. A study of 207 flight itineraries from eight small U.S. airports found that about one in six connecting trips (16.4%) ended with passengers missing their connection because of a delay or cancellation. Delays could compound during the journey, with a 68-minute first-flight delay growing to about 90 minutes by the final destination, especially disrupting travelers with tight connections. In this case, the crew’s decision to let those passengers off first gave them a better chance of making their next flights.

Sometimes, flight attendants make an exceptional effort that can help a stranger make a frightening situation feel much easier to handle. In another story, a flight attendant went out of her way to help a 25-year-old woman who was terrified of flying before her first flight. After the woman’s mother explained how anxious her daughter was, flight attendant Savannah arranged for her to board her flight early and personally walked her through what to expect. She even showed her the cockpit and introduced her to the pilots. By the time other passengers boarded, the young woman was in tears, telling Savannah, “I prayed for someone like you.”
