Items that hold personal value can push people to make surprisingly bold decisions to recover them. During a birthday boat trip in Florida, a mother’s quick reaction to a small accident soon caught the attention of many online. The incident happened when the Florida mom dove into chilly water to retrieve her fallen phone while her friends filmed the moment from the dock. The clip of the attempt was later shared on February 2, 2026, by Ariana, 25, on TikTok under the handle @ariibuk, as per PEOPLE. As the footage spread online, viewers noticed one surprising detail that made the rescue seem even braver and slightly hilarious at the same time.

As the mother, Betania, swam in the cold water, someone filming could be heard warning, “Watch the iguana on the wall.” The camera briefly captured a frozen iguana clinging to the dock beside the spot where the phone had fallen. The animal had stiffened because of the unusually cold weather. Betania later said she had no idea it was there while she was diving. Her full attention was on the glowing phone under the surface, and she only noticed the animal after watching the video later.

Earlier that evening, the group had been celebrating Betania's daughter, Laura’s 26th birthday. They had stopped for drinks and appetizers at The Cove in Deerfield Beach before heading back to their boat. Betania was taking photos as everyone climbed aboard, trying to capture memories from the celebration. Suddenly, her phone slipped out of her hand and dropped straight into the water near the dock. Ariana quickly began recording as the device sank deeper and later described the area where it fell as “such a bad place,” noting that the dock was covered with barnacles.

Even with those risks, Betania did not hesitate once she realized the phone was still visible underwater. She later explained that the decision to jump came instantly. “My mind was already made up,” she told the outlet. “The second my phone fell in that water, I knew what I had to do.” Someone nearby handed her a pair of goggles, and her daughter and friends gathered along the edge of the dock while recording the moment. In the video, Betania can be heard saying, “I don’t care,” just before she slipped into the chilly water.

The clip shows her swimming carefully near the dock while the group above guides her by pointing and calling out directions. At one point, she takes a deep breath and dives under the surface to search more closely. The video also included onscreen text that perfectly captured the moment, “When 40-degree weather doesn’t stop mom from jumping into the water for her phone.”

Later, Betania said the most amusing part came after she returned to the boat. “Clearly, there was a bit of fear just knowing how cold that water was going to be,” she explained. “Coming out of the water and seeing all the girls filming was actually hilarious.” Ariana later shared a follow-up TikTok video showing that the recovered phone still worked. The short clip showed it successfully connecting to Bluetooth during the ride home, with Ariana writing that everything turned out fine.
