Mom teaches ungrateful daughter a brilliant lesson after she throws her surprise gift in the trash
The need to be grateful and kind is an important quality and is taught to kids from a young age. Though a hard skill to excel in, people are encouraged to be appreciative and thoughtful of others. A mom, Haley Hassell, had a remarkable response when her little daughter, Presleigh, tried to take things for granted. The mother mentioned that her daughter had received a present about which she was very ungrateful. Hassell immediately decided to teach Presleigh a lesson the hard way. “Presleigh learned a tough love lesson today,” the mother wrote, as she explained how she reacted to the whole situation.
Hassell mentioned that she made painstaking efforts to find a particular pencil box for her daughter and surprised her with it. She thought the girl would be overjoyed to receive the present. “When I surprised her with it this afternoon, she stared at it, threw it in the trash and slammed the bedroom door. She yelled, ‘That’s stupid, everyone in my class has that. I don’t want it anymore!’” The mom was astounded by her daughter’s careless attitude and words. “What...stop! Come again?” she exclaimed. The mom added that she was infuriated at her child and tried everything to “not lose it.”
“I have worked so hard to completely take care of (my child) financially on my own and make sure she always gets what she needs,” her mom explained. She added that no matter what, she always thought she had imbibed the values of gratitude in her daughter. “Sis needed a small wake-up call! So, before completely going Madea mad on my child, I check myself and say, ‘Okay that’s fine, let me go get the one you’re going to use’,” she recalled. Hassell revealed that she walked in with a Ziploc bag and gave it to her daughter as her new pencil box.
“She lost her mind! Suddenly, the box she just trashed was good enough and the Ziploc bag was horrible...but it’s too late for all that,” the mom mentioned. She asked her daughter to get the pencil box out of the trash and told her that she was planning on giving it to someone less fortunate. “We would be finding a child to give it to tomorrow..one whose mommy and daddies don’t have money for any school supplies or someone who may not even have a mommy or daddy,” she explained to Presleigh. The mom further explained to the girl that she wasn’t “entitled to anything special and she was taking for granted how lucky she was.”
Hassell added that she gave her daughter the Ziploc bag to use for a while and decided to hand over the new pencil box to a less fortunate child, so the girl could feel the consequences of being ungrateful and ignorant. “Maybe I overreact sometimes but I would’ve done anything to have all the things she does as a child. I truly believe changing your perception and just being grateful can turn around any situation in life,” the mom concluded. A lot of parents supported her action in the comments section. Jenifer Jones Emerson wrote, “Good job Mom, a good lesson to be learned.” Angela Turner added, “Tough love is hard sometimes.”
