Grandma was crossing the road when a speeding car raced toward her granddaughter — her split-second move saved the child’s life
Many parents and guardians might put their own lives on the line to protect their children. A grandma did the same for her granddaughter when she saw a car headed towards them. She was just picking up her granddaughter from Reagan Elementary School when the incident happened. The vehicle was about to hit them when the grandma made a quick decision and pushed her granddaughter out of the way. People in her city praised the woman from Clovis for her brave act, per Fox 26 News.
"She pushed my daughter out of the way and saved her life. If it wasn't for her instinct, that grandmother instinct, my daughter wouldn't be with us today," the little girl's mom shared. "She’s just the best grandma that there is," another relative added. The grandma was hit by a car and sustained many injuries. She was recovering at the hospital after that. However, the doctors had explained that the woman was expected to recover well from all her injuries. The little girl sustained an injury to her clavicle, but was okay otherwise. The road near the school, Ashlan Avenue, had always been unsafe, according to the parents. So after the accident, many parents from the school were worried about car safety in the area.
"We as a family have been reaching out to get a crosswalk put in for years. Other parents have, too. We've been told it can't be done because there are no curbs, but I don't understand that. You could go straight through the median and create a space for a working crosswalk," Danielle Pierce, a parent whose daughter attended the school, revealed. The parents had also asked for flashing lights or for other safety measures, but their request for the same hadn't been fulfilled. Quite a few parents pointed out that the area was indeed risky for children and their families to be in. Many parents ended up crossing mid-block in the area because of heavy school traffic and that was dangerous for others.
"There is nothing more important than the safety of our students and their family members. Our staff members will be reviewing the safety measures already in place around Reagan Elementary, with an eye toward preventing future vehicle and pedestrian accidents," the City of Clovis shared. On the other hand, Clovis Unified pointed out that parents should avoid taking shortcuts before and after school to avoid the heavy congestion, as it might put people's lives at risk. The Clovis police revealed that the area had seen 21 accidents since January 2023 and it was a major cause of concern. "As a parent, what keeps me up at night is knowing this could happen to anyone," the little girl's mother went on.
Road safety measures are important to avoid such events. However, many other measures can be life-saving in case a crash does happen. In another story, a teen was hit by a car while riding his e-bike on the first day of school. Now, because he was wearing a helmet during the crash, he was expected to make a full recovery after the harrowing incident, per the Volusia Sheriff's Office. Many passersby noticed the incident and immediately rushed to take the teen to the hospital and ended up saving his life.
