Safety can be compromised even behind closed doors through a simple phone call, and so it is crucial to be alert and astute. Podcaster Maggy Wang, who shares her travel anecdotes as @themaggywang on Instagram, reached out to the hotel receptionist after a man called her room number and claimed that she had given him her contact details. The host of the "Head Over Heels" podcast had no idea who the person was. Recalling the incident in a clip on August 26, 2026, she mentioned how the employee quickly started investigating the issue. Then came the moment that made her blood run cold.

Wang immediately knew something was wrong after that call. “I don’t know who you are,” she told the man, but the interaction became even more unsettling when he asked what she was doing. She called the receptionist and explained the situation. Around the same time, she heard someone at her door. “Please don’t open the door,” the employee cautioned, as they stayed on the phone while trying to look into the scenario simultaneously. Luckily, the person who knocked was a technician who came to check the phone. Later, it was revealed that the stranger was a fellow guest. There was no clarity on how he got her details, but staff assured her that they had blocked the number and that the manager was alerted.

The guest mentioned that another woman might have been approached by the stranger, and she likely gave out a wrong room number for her own safety that ended up being Wang's. Commenters applauded her astuteness and urged her to be more firm during such unprecedented interactions. @pearple_ cautioned, "Please always be on the lookout when you’re traveling solo." @annaliese_wing said, “Men need to learn how to leave us alone. Just let us live in peace.” @laura.ddc remarked, "You handled it so well, and kudos to the hotel staff for acting promptly."

Traveling in an unknown place can expose a person to many unusual situations. Asking trusted people like staff members for help and taking action against creeps is necessary. In another incident, New York-based creator Celeste Polanco said she was on a trip when she received a random text from a stranger who claimed he knew her. When she asked how he got her number, he allegedly said he had “bought my number off of my Uber driver,” and even knew she was heading back to her hotel. The experience was an eye-opening reminder about how quickly a person's personal information could end up in the wrong hands. She reported the incident to Uber and the rental company and urged women to be cautious about sharing personal details while using services.
