He had zero kidney function after waking up from a medically induced coma — his parents' early Christmas present unexpectedly kept him alive
At times, severe health conditions can leave a person in circumstances where only an unexpected turn of events seems to make a difference. That’s what happened with North Carolina resident John Michael Mielcarski, whose kidneys failed due to an infection after he was placed in a medically induced coma and kept on a ventilator for over a month, as reported by Investigate TV on Monday, May 4, 2026. However, in what felt like a twist of fate, a gift his parents had bought for him as an early Christmas present later played a crucial role in saving his life, something he now considers incredibly fortunate.
Mielcarski's life took a turn for the worse in February when he first fell ill and developed a fever of 104–105 degrees. He was rushed to the hospital, where several tests revealed he had the flu, pneumonia, and possibly a perforated bowel. After the first surgery was halted when Mielcarski crashed, doctors succeeded on a second attempt. However, he later developed double pneumonia and, with critically low oxygen levels, was placed in a medically induced coma and kept on a ventilator for over a month. When he finally woke up, his kidneys had stopped functioning. As doctors discussed placing a permanent dialysis port, a Christmas gift from his parents, a dialysis machine turned out to be life-saving.
“Coolest Christmas present I ever got. Has my name on it. Tracy’s name (his fiancée), too,” said Mielcarski. His parents attended the Willie Stargell Celebrity Invitational Gala last November, where they bought the couple a dialysis machine as an early Christmas gift. The event brings together celebrities, friends, and fans of Willie Stargell for a weekend of dancing, golf, and fundraising to support kidney disease research and improve patient care.
“I don’t know all the different reasons people come and gather for the event. Maybe it’s just a blip on your calendar. You know—a social event. But it’s not. It’s somebody’s life,” he said. According to the Cleveland Clinic, Mielcarski's condition at that time could be considered kidney failure, in which both kidneys stop functioning. A Temple Health article explains that this results in excess water and waste products accumulating in the body. Dialysis treatment is required until the kidneys can function again.
Therefore, the dialysis machine bought by Mielcarski’s parents played a decisive role in his treatment. His parents and a doctor from South Carolina stood by him during treatment, while his wife sat anxiously in the waiting room. Although his life was saved, he had to relearn how to walk and talk. Even so, he remains deeply grateful and considers himself incredibly lucky to have received the early Christmas gift from his parents.
